Ok i got maybe a really stupid question. What does the theory of relativity actually mean
It's to do with stuff like the mass of objects bending/warping space and time itself, which is why there is gravity and time dilation. Imagine having the outside the box thinking to work that out.
 
Relativity is two related theories: special relativity, which explains the relationship between space, time, mass, and energy; and general relativity, which describes how gravity fits into the mix. Albert Einstein proposed these theories starting in 1905. By the 1920s, they were widely accepted by physicists.

I knew that mass distorted time, like a person on earth over the course of a year will age a fraction of second less than an astronaut living on the space station where there is less gravity. Satellites for sat navigation even have to account for this otherwise everything would be many kms off.

But until recently I just thought that gravity was some 'force' pulling objects together as Newton and the world did for a couple hundred years, when it is space literally being bent which is what is doing it.
