Ian said he lived in Korumburra for 41 years and Heather volunteered as a teacher’s aide and later taught English to migrants.
Don and Gail, who is Heather’s older sister, also lived nearby.
He said he and his wife were “very close” to the Pattersons and saw them about three times a week.
Asked about his relationship with Erin, Ian said: “I would say our relationship was friendly amicable. It didn’t have much depth.”
“We were more like acquaintances, we didn’t see a great deal of each other,” he said.
Ian said Erin attended church monthly on average and helped with the YouTube livestream of services.
Heather, he said, spoke more with Erin than he did but they didn’t consider it to be a close relationship.
Asked what type of person she was, Ian said she “just seemed like a normal person”.
“When we met, things were friendly. We never had arguments or dispute,” he said
