I don't think I've ever taken a tourist to the footy.

I've had a few ppl stay with me but they've been here in summer
My mum's late uncle was from the US. He had friends come over from Washington state. We took their son to a game at Waverly Park...that's how long ago it was. It was Swans v Bulldogs. He couldn't get his head around a "mark" and a "handball".

And he wouldn't barrack for the Swans because he said a swan wasn't as fierce as a bulldog 😠. He obviously hasn't been around a Swan when there's food around!

I ran into an American couple going into the MCG on the day of Fitzroy's last game in Melbourne in Aug 1996. They were staying at the Hilton across the street from the MCG and saw the crowd walking over, so decided to have a look.

Just by chance they were near me as I went in and I heard their accent and said hello. They joined me in the Olympic Stand and I tried to explain in simple terms what was going on. They didn't stay long and left in the second quarter I believe. I explained the significance of the game to them.

I went to it since I had gone to many Fitzroy games at the Whitten Oval since I had Social Club membership and got in free. I also had fond memories of when we played in the early 80s and in 1980 when we beat them at the Junction Oval, our first win of the season after losing the first 11 in a row.
