Its an absolutely beautiful day here in Melbourne. There's a warm breeze and you can hear the twittering of trolls in the trees: something is spooking them. I'm having flashbacks to the late 70's, when we had an imported coach who won flags elsewhere, a Balkan genius and two Shaw brothers.
I feel good about these finals. No-one expects a damn thing from us. Last year we finished nowhere. We have a bucketload of kids playing, and two of em (Swan and H Shaw) are burning.
Now I see Thomas named in the side to play North. I'm incredulous: wasn't he crippled? But what a fantastic sign. His emergence as a flashy, promising and occasionally brilliant player is symbolic of our season: I hope he can be part of the finale.
Pinch and punch fellow magpies. Its the first of a big month.
