If he wants to shorten the overall time for Quarters (not the actual playing time) then reduce the time between when a goal is scored and the bounce. In the past once the goal was kicked the ball was taken straight back to the centre and play started again. At the moment its goal scored, ball back to the centre and everyone sits around for at least a minute or more for the TV stations to finish their commercials.
Easiest way to save time is at stoppages around the ground

Why are boundary umps waiting 30 seconds for the ruck to arrive before throwing it in.
Remove umpires waiting for nominations. Could easily save 2+ minutes a quarter on ruck contests

The quicker the ball is in play the less congestion around the contest too.

All because of some ridiculous idea that 3rd man up needed to be banned up save the role of ruckmen

Swann wants to shorten the AFL matches. Leave the game alone.

Your going against the grain of history and historical records.

If anything that needs fixing up its the time of going to the score reviews for every contentious call.

Doesn't matter. 99% of fans are mindless sheep and will not only go along with it, within a year or two they'll obediently say how they were in favour all along.

It's a lost cause now.

Ive heard somewhere that by shortening the game , it allows for more commercial ads which I dont get.

The AFL Games have become lower scoring season by season. I understand for commercial channels anyway its lucrative if there are more goals in an AFL game. By having less goals, it decreases the value for the commercial partners.

The AFL have in the past wanted the game to be higher scoring, by changing their rules.

Fire michael Christian..he is not fit for the job.
then work on the umpires.
Every single week its just piss poor one sided decisions, one after another.

Nah fixing the rules/umpires is more important. Get rid of stand. Terrible rule, nearly as bad as contact below the knees. Go back to paying deliberate out of bounds. This insufficient intent is crap. Stop rewarding players for ducking, penalise players for throwing/dropping the ball, particularly when being tackled. Either pay push in the back or don't in marking contests. Complete lottery atm. Same with ruck holding frees.
Shouldn't just stop rewarding players for ducking/throwing their head back but actually penalise them for it. What happened to that being their prior opportunity? Start actually paying frees against them they wont do it.

Yeah that's what I meant is actually penalise players for it. They do occasionally but its very rare.

the old 'games are too long' chestnut. at afl headquarters we're hearing how the game is too long. they have literally repeated that very line many times.

they make some changes... and the game comes out the other end 1 or 2 minutes shorter. it's basically the broadcasters telling them, can you clean it up so it doesn't interrupt the news?

I don't mind the "shortenning" that they've been talking about so far, like reducing time for reviews, removing the ruck nomination and waiting for ruckman to appear etc. I'm all for stopping that shit. Getting rid of the stand rule will also help speed the game up.

Get rid of umpires, all the rules, and private school tossers. I want to watch psychotic maniacs killing each other over a piece of leather. Make the sport fun again
1. Slash AFL House staff numbers and budget.
2. Provide revenue sharing agreements with the AFLPA that allows for such increases in player wealth that they freely sign waivers against future legal action.
3. ???????????????
4. Profit.

Standardise the price of hot chips at all grounds, and tomato sauce is free !!!

get ready for cold chips then lol. Do people still these days eat inside the ground anyway?

This idea though of shortening quarters eg 16 minute quarters or 18 minute quarters, instead of 20 minute quarters is a bit farcical to me.

Yes I do understand the games tend to be going for long but there are other methods as you suggested for reducing the length of quarters.

Dillon is the equivalent of Adam Sandler playing an idiot in a movie who rises up to the top job, and spends his days playing with his toys while real people do the real work

Keep the clock running during ball ups like the old days, it’ll probably force coaches to open the game up more too.

Exactly, not open to reducing the length of the actual time as it ****s around with historical records and comparisons, plus I don't want to see less football.

But so many more avenues to speed up the game:

  • limit score reviews, and speed them up, they should start reviewing as soon as the goal is scored without being 'called' for by the umpire, and we shouldn't review points for things like marks / out of bounds, just let the umpire call it;
  • ruck nomination, 1m and waiting for ruckman, just throw the ball up and let the players go for it, no nomination and no waiting;
  • 6-6-6 warning, get rid of it and just pay the free kick or relax 6-6-6 or whatever
  • re-doing bounces, just get rid of the bounce and throw the ball up, maybe outside the first bounce of the game or a quarter.

Preserve the status quo and don't rock the boat.

The current state of the game is broken. AFL needs a major overhaul.

Game Length:
Matches are too long to hold the casual fan's attention span. The long-term target should be 2.5 hours, but changes must be gradual to avoid backlash from traditionalists.

Match Review Panel:
The system is inconsistent and lacks credibility. A complete overhaul is needed, starting with removing Michael Christian. Decisions must be transparent and consistent.

Umpiring & Rules:
Umpiring is a mess - too many officials, too many rules open to interpretation. The “stand” rule, protected area, sub rule, deliberate out of bounds - all flawed. Nobody understands ruck infringements anymore. The constant rule changes over the last decade need to be rolled back. Simplify the game.

The Draft:
It’s compromised beyond belief. Academy picks distort fairness and must be scrapped. Father-son selections should stay to honour tradition, but must operate under a fair market-based system with no discounts.

Mid-Season Tournament / State of Origin:
Stop entertaining gimmicks. AFLX was the warning. No mid-season tournament. No State of Origin revival. If you want to experiment, use AFLW.

Team Numbers & Expansion:
18 teams is too many for a limited talent pool. Quality has declined since expanding from 16 to 18. Too many players on lists who simply aren’t AFL standard. Cancel the 19th license. Relocate 2-4 Victorian clubs to address national imbalance.

Fixture & Finals Format:
24 home-and-away rounds for just 4 weeks of finals is outdated. Every team should play each other once, alternating home/away each year. A larger, more inclusive finals series should follow. Consider reintroducing the night series for non-finalists.

Bye Rounds:
One league-wide bye. Mid-season. No split rounds, no staggered rest weeks.

Brownlow Medal:
Umpires shouldn’t vote. Use an independent panel to judge the best player. Remove the “fairest” clause - current suspension criteria has rendered that stipulation irrelevant.

Pre-Season:
Bring back a proper pre-season competition.

Score Reviews:
They're slow and add little value. Let umpires decide live - they already make dozens of horrible judgment calls every game. Focus on improving overall officiating instead of obsessing over the precision of one small part.

Free Agency Compensation:
AFL clubs shouldn’t be rewarded for refusing to match fair offers. Scrap restricted free agency compensation entirely.

Grand Final Timing:
Move it to a night timeslot - the entertainment value and spectacle would be significantly better.

Round Zero:
Axed. It dilutes the excitement of the season launch and adds nothing meaningful.

Get it done, Swann. Call me if you need a 2IC.

While I do try to fill the kids up prior to a game, it's inevitable by 1/2 time that they will be hungry.

What's even worse is that you can't get hot jam-filled donuts at the gabba on the way out of the ground
