Are we in the position to start adding the cream to the top though? The similarities between the Dawks of 07 leading to 08 and our team this year are crazy yet are we in a position to challenge for the premiership next year and trying to give it a real shake? One more year of solid midfield drafting the likes of Acres/Bontempelli/Freeman/Salem could see the midfield almost complete with inclusions through Trade/Free Agency and we could address the game changer need next draft, it will be interesting to see the approach the recruiting team take with our 1st pick and will give us an indication of where we believe we are at. Very much looking forward to November the 21st.

I reckon we're not that far off it. When I did my best side for 2014 I came up with a stat that showed our best 22 IMO has averages of: height 188cm weight 88kg games 102 games.

Compare that with the 4 prelim final sides from this year and you'll see that we're smack bang in the mix:
Hawks 187cm 88kg 119 games
Freo 188cm 88kg 95 games
Geelong 188cm 89kg 106 games
Sydney 186cm 88kg 95 games

The key for us is keeping the core of the side on the park for most of the season. After all no side is going to go through without injuries but I think that the depth we now have is good enough to come in and fill a role. Anyway this is a discussion for another thread, but to answer your query yes I think we could benefit from adding a cream on top type of draftee.

Salem will go to us if he is available at our pick, tbh think that Lennon is the only one that the tiges will take if available at our pick ahead of salem (besides kelly and aish) so i just hope someone else takes salem.

I think if lennon and salem are gone, i see them looking at an acres or taylor maybe crouch going along FJ's principles in the past as our first

If you are going off FJ's principles in the past, why haven't you included Nathan Freeman as he is basically Brandon ellis take two but faster. Both 181 cm and both around the same weight, both hard nuts and both have pace.

There's a bit of footage of Freeman sprinting at the combine on the AFL site, think its day 3 of combine, will be a beast.

gotta disagree ellis has been earmarked by dimma as an outside runner with the occasional defensive forward position. Freeman has great inside work and is a clearance beast. Ellis has excellent gut running ability and freeman has outstanding breakaway pace. Height and shape mean little as the tigers development team will want freeman at a particular weight.

Ellis has a better mark but freeman has x-factor very different types but freeman has always been my first choice but he hasnt fit the tiges midfield model. lack of leadership and inconsistent. If we pick him up it'll be a turning point if the development team believ hes the last peice of the puzzle otherwise we llok at a safer bet like salem or taylor

I think you have missed my point, it wasn't about their role/specific abilities. It was about their attributes. Both tough nuts who don't shy away from a contest like Vlastuin, conca, arnot (not a first round pick same attribute though) and both have genuine pace. Who isn't inconsistent on our team at the moment, all kids are inconsistent they just need to be developed right and gain a bigger tank over a couple of pre seasons. There is never a safe bet with a draftee, thats why so many so called safe bets that were top 10 or 20 draftees get delisted each year or never become better than a average player.

Wish list:

Freeman as that final missing piece to our midfield.
Impey as the crumbing forward we lack.
Dwayne Wilson as that pacy half forward.

No chance of it though.

...with you on Dwayne Wilson. :thumbsu: Many have him going 3rd round which would be a bargin.

Hoping Scharenberg is seen as too 'inbetween' and slides. :rainbow:

Freeman for me. We need a line-breaker, explosiveness and hurt factor. Conca, Ellis & Vlas have all been good solid, sensible choices but we don't need a 4th clone. Take an educated risk Tigers

Conca, Vlastuin, and Ellis are all very different players. I don't think FJ has targeted a certain type of player but instead characteristics. Needs to have a body that is either well developed or will put on size without a problem, good kick, good character and is a footballer over athlete, making them much more likely to be boom rather than bust. Now that we have a pretty solid side however we may godown the Hawks path and take someone with a little more x factor so while past picks would suggest Salem I wouldn't be surprised to see us take Freeman or Taylor if they are still on the table.

What has the Pacific got to do with footy. :p

I voted freeman over lennon in the poll because of his comparison to Dangerfield. Either freeman or lennon will be a great first pick though and will be happy with either.

Crouch. Lost center clearances and total clearances against Carlton in the final. And we lose tuck our second best clearance player. Don't see how run and x factor is going to help if you cant get the ball. (and yes losing conca hurt, but it proves even more how important these types of players are). Plus if it helps to free up a stronger Cotchin to break lines instead of doing the grunt work all the better.

I see Freeman more as a Shuey type. Dangerfield is huge, Freeman doesn't have those same capabilities.

Bret Anderson doesn't mention Sheed in his top 11. Starting to think there's a real chance he'll slide to our pick.

Salem is probably my number 1 choice (by a whisker) but I think he'll be gone. The filth will take him, bless his soul. Sheed is a close second.

tigs2010 what's your feeling about this as of now? Looking likely that Sheed will be available, should we take him?

I think Sheed will be there and I'd be pretty happy with that. He's just a really good footballer. I don't think he's as one-paced as people say.

I don't think he is one paced, I think he is more one dimensional. Just a pure mid in my eyes. A very good mid, though, and can play inside or outside. I just don't think he can do much else. Could be wrong.

I am going to wait until draft day and listen to fj read out our pick and then I will vote for that guy
I got sucked in wanting grundy last year

What chance do we have of getting Freeman?

I'd say about 20%. Not very high. If we had of finished lower than Collingwood, it would be a fair bit higher, but if he is there, Collingwood WILL take him.
