I've watched Freeman, Kelly and Salem all train at the Sandi Dragons as they train at my local park. Kelly obviously out of reach but all three look like they have great heads on them, always train hard.

I'm not a huge Crouch fan. I think he's a bit sloppy for my liking. No doubt he'll rack up a heap of the ball but I feel a Sheed can do that too and do some damage with it. And I can't see both Sheed AND Salem both being gone.

Watched Crouch a fair bit in Ballarat. Has the Luke Parkers about him that I saw. Love that type myself.

Does anyone think there is a chance we could snag Cameron McCarthy? He looks very natural as a KPF and I'd like us to go after this type. I don't believe the group of talls we have presently will provide us with a CHF. Most of our talls appear to be Forward pocket, Relief rucks. The little I've seen of this kid impressed me. Do you think he'll be available at our pick?

He will be there most likely but we won't take a forward with our first pick.

Why would we not take a forward with our first pick? I understand that this is a draft that appears to have little big man strength, however, I find it hard to believe that Richmond would not consider this kid. Cameron McCarthy looks to be the next quality KPP/forward after Boyd and RFC has recruited midfield consistency type players the last 3 years in Conca/Ellis and Flos.

At some stage the Tigers will need to take a punt on a mobile KPP type. Our forward line does not have enough quality big men. We are trying to load up with resting 2nd ruck/forward types. McCarthy looks like a more athletic JR8 type to me and I think would be a worthy selection. This guy has a bit of flamboyance about him. Don't you think we have enough midfielders? Is another B grade midfielder going to get us the ultimate reward?

because you essentially need to take the best available talent particularly early in the draft. If you pick a tall, even tho on talent they might be down the talent curve by say 10 spots, mean you can lose out on a talent basis. I haven't explained it well but you can lose both ways by not picking the best talent which may become a good player and the player you picked doesn't come on either. Any way you cut you try to pick players that will have good careers, if a they become champs then that's a bonus!

be good to have a "sheeds" back in Tiger colours ;)

We would not take a forward because that is not how our recruiters, have recruited with our first pick in the last 4 years. It has been pick the best strong bodied midfield available, who doesn't back away from a contest, dimma style with our first pick (Martin, conca, ellis, vlastuin) and i don't see that philosophy changing for the recruiters any time soon.

Philosophy has been to take best available. They just happen to be mids over forwards.

Thanks Jonesracing82 for the link. The thing about Salem in the review is it states he is very good but was a bit quiet against the div 1 teams. Can anyone comment on that statement who is in the know ?? It's one thing to have 1 or 2 quiet games it's another if he was consistently held or beaten by Div 1 opponents. If he's taken by us I still trust FJ, bcause he gets to see a lot more of these kids than most of us do.....

2 other guys had pretty quiet champs... Trent Cotchin and Nick Vlastuin ;)

FWIW i think he racked up 15-20 touches which is pretty reasonable in champs games as there is no time on.

It isn't a coincidence that they have all been strong bodied mids. What do Martin, Conca, Ellis and Vlastuin all have in common they are not afraid of contest attack and are all hard nuts and all came to the club in the dimma era. Dimma would've had a huge influence on what type of players he wanted the recruiters to find for him. They are the ones that remind him of the way he played, that is why we started to pick players who are hard nuts such as Martin, Conca, Ellis, Vlastuin and is also why we traded down our pick one spot in the 2011 draft to get Steven Morris.

No doubt there is a type of player in terms of them being big and ready to go but if a forward was deemed better than either of those 4 they would have been taken. If Boyd slipped to our pick we'd take him. Last year we looked at Corr and Jaksch as possibilities if Vlastuin went before our pick. Year before there wasn't much there in the way of forwards. 2010 we liked Tom Lynch just not as much as Conca.

If Boyd slipped no doubt we would look at him but that aren't going to happen though. if we had pick 1 and there was a strong bodied midfielder who had a good inside/outside game, who was just as good as boyd. We would most likely take the strong bodied mid before him. With Conca and Vlastuin they were never going to be picked up by clubs before our pick as no one who had a pick before us had as much interest in them as we did, meaning the others weren't really throughly considered. Us taking Conca at six was seen as a bit steep and was only put in everyones phantom drafts at 6, 4 or 5 days before the draft as they learnt of our heavy interest in him. He was seen as definate first rounder but closer to 10-15.

That's my point though. We will take a big-bodied mid if WE deem him best available. If we deem a tall as best available then we'd take him. I don't think we will see McCarthy as best available at pick 12 but if we did we'd take him. We rated Conca 2nd/3rd in that draft behind Day and maybe Swallow.

If it's a mid we are after , looks to be no doubt we"ll get a good one with our 1st pick. Anyone else like Shred, AFL draft has him falling past us. Similar specks to Dusty...

We did, no else did thats why lynch was never throughly considered. McCarthy is also not that strong bodied type, we look for with our first pick. We tend to take more of a risk with our second pick and later, Example: mcbean. Boyd would be considered, if we had the first pick because he is already that strong bodied type.

Well yeah he was our first preference that was realistic at that pick. But we rated Day at 1 that year which goes against your argument that we only take big-bodied mids. He was pretty skinny. Certainly no Boyd at the time. Fact is we go best available. If McCarthy is seen as the best player at pick 12 they will snap him up quickly. I don't think he will be the best one there though and we will end up with a midfielder. We rate Kelly quite highly this year and he's built like a 12 year old girl.
