First Round Draft Pick for Brown

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Bock is a better player than Brown, for sure

Geelong must be licking their lips at the compo that Ablett will deliver.

Two first round picks easy.

I still don't understand how it works.

Say Geel do get that. Two at the end of the first round.

And want to use them both this draft. And you want use yours.

How do they figure out which of the 3 picks comes first?

I understand Vlad and his boys go through an arcane ritual often practiced by the more 'enlightened' pre-reformation cardinals.

It involves, nudity, an applecart and the empty corridors of AFL house.

That's probably as good a guess as any.

Any club that uses their compensation pick before 2012 would be crazy.

Not only do GWS and Gold Coast get the lions share of first round selections in 2010 and 2011 but you also have to remember that they have already chosen the best 17 yr olds before the 2010 and 2011 national drafts.

So even if GSW and Gold Coast did not get the extra first rounds selections, the draft has already been compromised....

I think it is then judged on ladder position for that year. So the team finishing lower on the ladder would get the first pick.

It's the same pick as Bock, it's not a first round 'after our first selection pick' it's an end of first round pick. It's end of first round regardless of what year we use it, it's just that the number will be lower if it's used in the 2012 draft or later. We might get a pick 17 for it, if we're patient.

Yep same as Riska best you can hope for is pick 19(18 teams).

I would still have preferred to have Campbell Brown in the side for his spirit and endeavour. Obviously the AFL agree about his worth.

Campbell's Last Gift - First Round Pick

Sorry if this is covered in one of the other numerous Browny threads.

Hope this is true

UPDATE 4.27pm: HAWTHORN will receive a first-round draft pick as compensation for losing Campbell Brown to the Gold Coast.
The AFL is set to release the club's compensation this afternoon but it is understood the league will grade Brown in one of its highest categories.
The expectation was Brown would be deserving of only a second-round pick, but Hawthorn is pleasently surprised to be given an earlier selection.
The Hawks can use the pick in the first round from 2012, or use it at the start of the second round in this year's draft.

Don't everyone get confused. This is a beginning of the second round pick. Not the end of the first round.

Must use it after 2012 only....

Go Hawks!

You lot are all idiots.......
Last year Port Adelaide wanted 2 first round draft picks for S.Burgoyne, and if you remember rightly, they were interested in taking our first rounder plus Campbell Brown (much to the dismay of the members).
So on that rationale.....Campbell Brown = first round pick.
The fact he has been graded as band 3 is probably fair, not generous as some would like to think. To think that we got the deal of the century is just plain ******ed.......
If anything, Bock should have been worth a Band 2....which is a first round pick taken immediately after the clubs standard first round pick. Whilst Brown isnt half the player that Bock is, he is a year or so younger, an all Australian and premiership player......and wages offer by GC to these 2 players is similar.

Rest assured also, G.Ablett if he goes, will be a band one.....2 first round picks.....I believe to be taken immediately after the clubs standard first rounder for the draft they use the pick.

And any clown that thinks we need to use our picks to get Chris Tarrant, a 30 year old, injury prone hack that isnt even sure if he wants to play footy next year is doing the club a significant injustice. I just hope that Pelchan and Clarko have an ounce of sense and quash this quick smart.
Lets back our players, and top up with some younger talent rather than applying the Brisbane Lions model.

Not sure where you are getting that information from LE, this is from the AFL Website regarding our compensation.

HAWTHORN will receive a draft pick at the end of the first round to use in one of the next five drafts as compensation for losing Campbell Brown to Gold Coast.

If the Hawks choose to use the pick in this year's draft, they must notify the AFL by November 5.

The compensation offered to the Hawks was the same as Adelaide received for losing Nathan Bock and the Brisbane Lions received for losing Michael Rischitelli.

He's being glass half empty. And in any case, end of first round = beginning of second round.

I think what people are forgetting when they suggest delaying the pick is that most other clubs will be thinking the same way.

For example the upcoming draft will go

Premiers
WestCoast
Brisbane - Rit
Adeliade - Bock
Hawthorn - Brown

And that's not counting anyone who finished below us also getting a first round compo pick

Next year if we finish higher on the ladder then everyone below us who did not use thier pick will also be below us.

Then W Sydney comes in and effectively doubles the number of compo picks floating around.

Hooray, at last someone talking sense.

The compo for Brown is fair. He is a MUCH better player than Nathan Krakouer who was "worth" a 2nd round pick.

Last year Port were falling over themselves to get Brown. People saying he was only worth a 3rd rounder have absolutely NFI.

Geelong will get 2 first-round picks for Ablett, fair enough too.

I have to agree with Books and Bumsonseats ^^ as well. GC had access to eight quality underage players last year and 4 mature age rookies. (if my meomory serves me correctly)

Supposedly these 17 year olds would have been amongst the top picks in this draft. This means in real terms our first pick is, ((due to the compromised draft), 27 (as opposed to 19) and if we use Brownies compo this year it equates to a pick in the early to mid thirties. Hardly anything to write home about.

And as for the Adelaide sooking and complaining I would take Browns last 5 years over Bocks any day. IMO Brown was more consistent and reliable.

Wonder if Crazy Vossy would consider trading Daniel Merrett for this compensation pick, needs to free up some salary cap for Black and Power as they are the future at the Lions.

Those harsh QLD rays can't be good for Merrett and I would love to see him in the brown and gold.
