I'm genuinely not sure if you're an idiot, or just trolling, looking for attention.

I'm not trolling. But I have been called an idiot on plenty of occasions.

I kind of agree with you. I like dogs but personally I don't have the time or effort to look after one properly so I don't think I would ever get one. The thing I don't like about some people is that they just assume everyone will love their dog and your some kind of horrible monster if you don't coo over their animal and get angry because they have entered your property and shat on your lawn.

I also think its a bit rude people taking their dogs to inappropriate places and let them run amok.

I'm kind of like that. I like dogs, I grew up with them, and I was very fond of every dog that lived with us.

But my parents brought it home, and I got attached to it after.

Going out and just buying some brand new dog you've never known before and have no attachment to, I find a bit weird. Is it a parenting instinct? Maybe I don't have that.

****in dogs. I just don't really get it. You pay money for them. Often a lot. They bark and piss off you and your neighbours because they're trapped in a suburban block. They shit everywhere and you have to pick it up like some kind of slave. They need constant attention and time. They stink. They drop hair. They're dirty and trail that around when they come inside, which I guess is better than when they piss or shit inside. You have to plan around them when you go away or have a last minute change of plans when you're not home. They get sick and injured and cost you a bomb to fix.

They're cute sometimes, and fun to play with for about 5 mins. But anybody older than 10 gets bored with them pretty quickly.

WTF?
they are such a great leveller. whether you've had a great day or a shit day you come home and the dog just wants love and attention and to play with you. the amount of times i've come home from a shit day, dog runs up with a ball and 15 minutes later the stress of the day just melts away... even if she did nothing else good she'd be worth it for that alone

Didn't want a dog but the partner really wanted one so i gave in and told her be prepared that you will be taking care off it which she has

Wouldn't change a thing to be honest has provided us with a lot of joy and some lessons in responsibilities which will come in handy if we ever have kids

They don't call them practice kids for nothing.

6 weeks is a bit young, your obviously not buying it from a breeder that gives a shit. They don't stop weaning off their mothers milk till 8-12 weeks. You should pop into your local vet and ask a few questions, puppies can get sick very easily until they are fully vaccinated. You not even supposed to take them out in public areas till 12 weeks.

please dont get a border collie if you live in town. please.

These two things. It's waaaay too young to be leaving its mother, and it's a working breed. Unless you have a few hundred sheep in your backyard perhaps consider a more appropriate breed.

my family has no idea I'm doing this, it's part of a birthday surprise for my sister. So trying to keep it on the down low is hard when I'm really excited. ;)

Awesome dog mate.

After you surprise your family with the most active dog known to man, you will need to surprise them with a couple of acres.

These dogs don't belong in suburbia.

yeah i was in no way saying dont get a dog. just that border collies arent the right breed to be in an urban yard, its not fair on the dog imo.

I grew up with german shepards when I was little (one of the most oddest yet coolest experiences when I was in primary school was seeing one of the german sheperd's was giving birth to puppies. They were so tiny, yet bigger than my arm :D. Sadly we couldn't keep the dog nor any of the puppies ourselves afterward.

When we moved house we eventually got another dog and it was a border collie, was an offspring from a circus show dog, the previous owner abused her . She was very timid as a result and didn't really respond well to adult male's (always hated my father :D). Over time she used to do so many awesome things, like whenever my grand mother came over to visit my grand mother would get jumped all over:D (the amusing thing about it was that when the dog would "stand up" to greet her at the side entrance, the dog was pretty much taller than her and would nearly push her down (despite having a timid nature).

She could never be trusted off the dog lead - we lived across the road from the largest football/cricket oval, if we let her go she'd bolt away and gradually find her way to the streets and oncoming traffic.

The yard back then would not be suitable for any dog let alone a border collie (since they need farm size space!). Still gave her a lot of love and attention over the years, I was devastated when she had to be put down (another element of my childhood had disappeared and was there from early childhood to early adulthood). Always promised myself after that to not get another pet until I had a family of my own (as I am morbid in that I would want them to experience the same pain I went through when the dog passed away).

I know I have told this story before in other pet thread but oh well.

Have a Lab puppy that's a couple of months old now. Walk them regularly. There were a few times when nobody was home or I was home but just left my dog out there for a while to roam around, and he went bloody nuts chewing all sorts of things. They can get very bored.

Socialise them as soon as you can too. Having a puppy that can interact with humans and other dogs from a young age is very important, teaches them good habits early.

Just picked up a 6 and a half year old greyhound last night. Racing name was Bowl Along.

Was destined for the pound if no one was prepared to take him as owner didn't want him anymore.

Great breed for a family pet. Very placid and good natured. Oh and lazy!!!

I'm pretty sure he thought he was in a 5 star hotel last night compared to the conditions he was previously in.
