In the time I supported the Roys, we had the likes of Pert, Lynch, and Paxman at full-back. S.Hawking, J.Molloy, P.Caven, M.Seecamp, and J.McCarthy all had stints down there during those times, but the three mentioned earlier would have been regarded as the 'main defender' of their time.

G.Pert - one of the best full-backs I've seen. Not only able to beat his opponent, but also create drive from the back line. A great aerial contestant - took many high-flying marks in defense. He had the aerial abilities of J.Leppitsch, and the dogged, determined defensive nature of S.Silvagni. I remember him kicking a goal one day, after running from HB to HF, banging it from outside 50m. Top stuff! The Gary Pert I remember was always doing stuff like this. Always loved a run, and backed himself for it on many an occasion. How many times did we see him clear the ball from defense - sending it up as far as the wing? What a champion!

A.Lynch - another dour defender who was good in the air. Probably one of the strongest full-backs going round, whilst he held the position. He was one of the few who could match it, body-on-body, with the likes of Lockett, Ablett and Dunstall. Super quick for a player his size, he was capable of playing in other key positions, and possesed a strong mark.

S.Paxman - perhaps not that glamour-player that the previous two were, but still a great servant of the Roys. Week in, week out, Paxman would take on the toughest forward-line opponent. In fact, Paxman would have been one of the more under-rated Fitzroy players in the time I supported the club. I once heard G.Healy comment that Paxman was unlucky not to have earned state selection for Victoria in his time with the Roys (stating that if it hadn't been for Martyn and Silvagni, Paxman would have more than likely been a regular state representative). I reckon a few other clubs wouldn't have minded having Paxman down back for them at times. I remember him curbing the likes of S.Loewe, N.Holland, and M.Richardson (Rich), just to name a few of the top names. On a week to week basis, Paxman would have been one of our most consistent performers in the last few years of the Roys in the AFL - possibly one of the first few chosen every week by the selectors. A great, yet under-rated servant of the Roys!

I'm interested to hear from others, about the full-backs previous to my time as a supporter. The likes of Merrigan, Serafini, etc.

Harvey Merrigan was as solid as a rock at full-back. He was a strong mark, an excellent kick & possessed fine judgement. He had a great record against some of the champion full-forwards, such as Peter Hudson & Peter McKenna.

Lorenzo Serafini was a real dasher. He liked to go for a run & was fortunate to have good players around to back him up.

John Duckworth was also a very good full-back. He was a thumping kick - the best in the League during his time. Merrigan wasn't far behind. Ducky probably would have had more opportunities if he'd been at another club. At Fitzroy, he always played second fiddle to Merrigan. Ducky was also one of the toughest players I've seen at Fitzroy.

If I had to pick the best full-back I've seen at Fitzroy, I'd struggle to split Merrigan & Pert. I'd love to have them both in my side. I reckon Perty could have been a brilliant centre-half-back, if given the chance. Of course there was another bloke, called Roos, who had that position sewn up.

Looking back at some old vids made me realise what a great player Sera was. The passage of time and his injury shortened career (played his last senior game aged 26) have conspired to diminish his standing as one of the great FFC players of his era.

Perty was only 25 when he last lined up for the Roys. A potential all-time great of the game; shot down by wonky knees and contractual shenanigans. Pert was a substantially better footballer than Roos IMHO.

Didnt Terry O' Neill cover for Sera in the early 80's when he was injured. My old man reckons Merrigan was pretty good(I am too young to remember him) What about Roger Delaney. Came with huge credentials fron SA and I can still visualise him breaking down in his first game at Windy Hill. Achilles I think. Never recovered - maybe he was overated. I dunno

You wouldn't want to remember them, Darky.

Rod Carter cost us several games back in 1978 & Peter McCormack only lasted about 20 minutes before he was dragged. He'd already had about 4 goals kicked on him.

Delaney looked quite good in a pre-season night game against St Kilda, but never got a chance after he hurt his leg in that 1st game against the Bombers.

Chris Duthy was another full-back we recruited in the hope we could release Perty from the goalsquare. He managed 3 games.

To say Pert was substantially better than Roos is a VERY big call. They were both champions, but I'd have Pert marginally ahead. When they played against each other in practice matches, Pert won. Both had sensational skills, but Perty was a better kick & was probably more desperate. Roos is definitely right up there with the best of them. I'm not questioning his desperation either. It is more that Pert was an absolute desperado. This contributed to his knee injuries, as he never gave in.

It was a crying shame that Pert didn't play his whole career with the Roys. Unfortunately, we couldn't afford to pay him, when he was going to miss 12 months with his knee injury. I always thought we should have paid him as an assistant coach for that year. That way he would have earnt his money. He was very astute. Our assistant coach that year was Gary Buckenara. I'm sure the money would have been better spent on Pert.

It was also a shame Roos couldn't play his whole career with the Roys, but by the time he left, it was all over. I don't blame him for wanting to see how he'd go at another club, without all the added pressures he had at Fitzroy.

Congratulations on #100 posts, Fat Pizza!

I remember Chris Duthy. Well, his name at least. His on this Roys team poster that I have, from season '87. He was standing next to L.Serafini.

It's a definite shame that the likes of Roos, Pert, Lyon, Osborne, Lynch, Blakey, Gale, Broderick, Kappler, McIvor, Armstrong didn't stay on to form a super-power Roys team. Just looking at those names, having had the chance of being able to have an injury free season, we sure would have given them a shake.

And to think that we snared Johnson, Molloy and Barker in the 93/94 draft! Hey, that was coming off a good season!

Just imagine how good our seasons from 94 onwards would have been with the names above on our lists!
