ST JOHNS NO MATCH FOR ALL CONQUERING REDS

I was brought up in Hampton Park. Please don’t hold it against me, I had no say in it. As such, I should probably follow St Johns as they are my “local” club when it comes to the V.A.F.A. I’ve even played for their equivalent cricket side, St Mary’s. But on Saturday, no, I’m glad I don’t support them. For a club aspiring to play finals footy, they were good in patches. In context of the whole game though, the Reds were far too good, getting up by a tidy 78 points. The Roys lifted a notch on Saturday, knowing that the Jocs would be better than some of the other sides we’ve played. The Reds were strong in every position, showing why they are unbeaten at the halfway mark of the home and away season. A great sign of the Reds success is the increasing number of old Fitzroy supporters coming to check out the team. The level of noise each time the Reds scored seemed to be louder than what it has been at previous games. Great stuff!

The first quarter was a tussle as each side tried to work the other one out. For this first time this season, the Reds looked like they might be in for a contest. St Johns were matching the Reds for pace, and they looked like they had done their homework as far as the Reds forward line is concerned. In saying that though, the Reds forward line looked more settled with Jezza back in the line up across half forward. Neither side’s forward lines were able to get on top in this term, although the Reds did miss a number of chances. JB and Mush looked good around the ball, while Hot Dog and Willy Ronke looked dangerous when they got the ball. The Reds were up by 9 points at ¼ time, much to the chagrin of Coach Graham Burgin, emphasising the Reds superiority over their opponents. He demanded the Reds be up by 5 goals at ½ time. There was an edge to Burgin’s voice that hasn’t been heard this year; such was the closeness of the first term.

The second term opened with St Johns kicking the first two goals of the quarter and taking the lead. They were getting the ball out of the centre too easily and getting the ball in their forward line with ease. No panic descended upon the Reds, who in the face of such pressure, could respond in only one way, kicking the next 8 goals unanswered to set up a 49-point half time lead. The Mobbenführer declared this to be the Reds finest hour (20 minutes anyway!) of the season thus far. The Reds displayed skillful, team orientated football against our first opponent this year to have the gall to take a lead. JB set it up with great dash on the wing and around the middle, as well as kicking a great goal from the forward flank on the run. Mush was quiet early in the term, but turned it up and was dominant in the midfield. Curtis was also handy around the ball, and Jezza’s dominance at centre half-forward was evident. This season, the eastern end of the ground has proved to be our hoodoo end. This looked to have been exorcised as 7 different goalkickers contributed. The damage could’ve been worse, but for Hot Dog and Willy missing two relatively easy chances.

The third term started slowly, as neither side was able to gain control. The St Johns defence tightened up on the Reds forwards, an obvious indication of a half time bake. Honours were pretty much even for the term, with Fitzroy kicking 3 goals to St Johns’ 2. Mush was a standout in this term, continually doing the hard things when he didn’t have his hands on the ball. Jezza was continuing to show his presence around the forward line, as did Krusty Addicott, getting a lot of touches running past teammates, as well as kicking a goal. Teflon and Steve Drury were strong in defence, clearing the ball on the numerous occasions St Johns pushed forward. The Reds were up by 63 points in the last term.

With the Bentleigh game in mind when the Reds gave up a large ¾ time lead to only win by 20 points, the Reds were determined to play a good last quarter. St Johns continued to fight it out and weren’t disgraced, however the Reds continued to have too many winners when it counted. Curtis got a lot of possessions, Dacca was a strong focal point upforward (2 goals for the quarter), and Krusty and Mush continued to keep on keeping on, finishing out the game strong. As was the case all day, the Reds missed a lot of opportunities in front of goal, and the final margin could’ve been a lot greater with 37 scoring shots to 14. At the halfway point of the season, Fitzroy Reds sit on top of the D3 ladder undefeated, 4 points clear of their nearest challenger with a healthy percentage. Let’s hope the second half of the season provides as much entertainment as the first.
