Hi all,
Congrats to Mobbenfuhrer, Slax, Gregtri, Greg's mate and Levo's English friend, who all attended and loved it!!!!!
REDS OFF THE MARK IN 2001
The Fitzroy Reds kicked off the 2001 season in sensational fashion on Saturday in a brilliant display of wet weather football. In conditions normally reserved for the opening round of the cricket season, the Reds defeated Richmond Centrals to the tune of 71 points.
Before the start of the game, the weather was threatening to turn ugly. With grey clouds above and air thick enough to cut with a knife, the Reds began the game looking committed. With D. Timms collecting a “Buckley-esque” number of possessions on a half-forward flank, and the backline holding the firm, Fitzroy held a 15 point lead at quarter time. It was just prior to the quarter time break when the heavens opened.
The second quarter was played shocking conditions. There was thunder, there was lightning, the Reds were bloody exciting! You’d better knock on wood so this can continue. As the ball got wetter, the Reds played better. With Mush Jackson using his bulky frame to edge out his opponents, Krusty Addicott dangerous on a flank and “Mystery Man 97” presenting himself upforward to kick two goals, the Reds went in at half-time with a match winning 35 point lead.
We expected Richmond, third place last year in D3, to come out after half time. Considering the weather, still raining, still horrible, it would be hard to lift yourself being so far down. The Cobra’s did play with a little more system in this term, but couldn’t stop the Reds rampaging-style, who continued to score goals with ease. T. Clarke added 2 more goals to take his three-quarter time tally to 4. The Reds kick 4 goals to 1 in the third term, leading by 52 points at the last change.
The last quarter was a forgone conclusion, but Fitzroy continued to surge forward, adding another 3 goals and missing another 3 or 4 easy shots (easy to say from the sidelines in a wet weather match), with Richmond Centrals adding another 1 to their tally. The Fitzroy Reds eventually finished victors to the tune of 71 points.
This was a very encouraging way to start the season. I cannot remember ever seeing a lower level side playing such good football in the wet. The system employed by coach Graham Burgen was executed to perfection by his players. Marks were being held, kicks were finding men and all the one percenters went our way. And when the boys sang “Premiers we’ll be this year” after the final siren, well………..
