Five Players Delisted

Ross a victim of us having a high number of smaller quick players. yes
Lower's knee is finished yes
Warren is a medium forward and Anthony is a rare commodity of height and speed in a midfielder. Needs to improve disposal and you have an Embley type!

Obviously Warren may have a different role to play next year (backman ??) his work rate surely warrants a trial down back when its quite obvious he is not favored behind edwards/lachie/Mckinley??
Anthony may have struggled this year but he is too good of a player to simply cast away in these times.

Do you honestly think they did it that way??
Bullschit!! Brad no doubt would have spoken to them eye to eye.....I would expect nothing less!

Paraphrasing Brad from AFL Inisder: "This week we will sit down every single player and staff member and have a half hour meeting (70 people, 70 1/2 hr meetings), in that half hour meeting those who are no longer going to be kept on the list will be informed.

So yes thats exactly how i think it went down.

Well that sucks for Ben Ross. The club did great to stick by him in his recovery from two surgeries. It seems strange to me that they'd cut him loose just when he's back to 100% and showing what he can do. They've invested a whole year in helping him get healthy. Also, the guy copped a concussion then came back and kicked two goals and set up a third in the final quarter last week.

I guess these decisions come down to Brad Scott knowing the kind of team he thinks he's going to need to win a flag. Ross must not fit in that team. Seems odd, given the year we had where we didn't have outside pace from guys who could kick goals. That's Ross.

Only thing I can think of is that Scotty is thinking of our structure two years down the track and doesn't see room for a lot of players with the same skills/speed (Ross, Speight, McMillan). That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

If we're going to trust the guy with rebuilding the club, I guess he deserves the right to pick the list he wants and build the team he believes can win. I'm certain that's all he's trying to do. I suppose that means that even good players don't always fit, depending on the personnel and system, which sucks for Ben Ross. :(

I heard Ed's knee was stuffed. He couldn't play if he wanted.

Scratching my head over Benny Ross.
White also showed glimpses.

I ****ing hate this time of year.

May not have a rookie list with the new agreement.
May just have a 46 man list.

Ross deserves to be rookied.
I presumed Lowers knee is good as done but nothings been said on that front so the delisting looks harsh at the moment.
Milkys never been the same after getting injured against the Saints in 2009. Worth persisting with?? If you look back to the 2010 Nab Cup game against Geelong he was in immaculate condition, showing glimpses and having a superior upper body. His lats stuck out like wings. But its been a poor 2 years since.
Anthonys had a shocker. I hope all the boys coming off shoulder injuries dont suffer the same blues. Whitey also had a shoulder injury and is now delisted so touch wood for this preseason again.

We knew the club was going to make some hard choices but it doesnt make it any easier reading these guys are gone. Cant imagine how they would of felt sitting in the meeting and hearing "<Name>... Im sorry but"
Something like this...?

Call the company together, and break it to Jones very gently that he lost his mother.’ So the sergeant called them all together and said, ‘All those with mothers, take one step forward.’ Quickly adding... ‘Not so fast, Jones. Where do you think you're going?’

Ross was around for 4 years and played 14 games, thats showbiz, if you struggle to play footy at senior level then your ability to hold onto a spot on the list is dubious.

This is just the first round, I doubt we are close to the end of the culling. Ross' major problem was that he wasn't a fantastic kick, if he had sublime kicking skills then he might have been saved by our need to improve the skill quality.

Not going to be a good time to be struggling for game time and be dubious by foot.

Uhhh no.

Was referring to the individual meetings they were conducting, they only attend one meeting each, thus meeting rather than meetings as I was referring to an individual.

Also, people wouldn't have been named in front of the group.

They will be going through their post-season evaluations at an individual level, those guys who were going to be cut would have been told face to face by Scott and explained why and if there is a possibility to fight for a rookie position.

The ones that keep training will be ones earmarked as possible rookies if naturally they don't get any interest from another club.

OK so there is a lote of love for Ross who I also liked the look of. But - who would you have delisted instead of him who plays a similar role and is not contracted. That is the question.

No surprises there. Ross had almost reached overrated status on here. Some of the comments about him are just silly. The truth of the matter is he is below average height, pace, skills, strength, endurance, defensive game and is injury prone. If we are ever to leave the below average section of the ladder, blokes like him need to go. His contract saved him last year, but he was never going to get another.

Pratt, I imagine, has not been delisted yet as we probably are waiting on Thompson. If we cannot retain Thommo, then we would be negligent to move on Pratt, especially with Brady already retired and Spud also very near the end.

McKinley and Urquhart are very lucky boys. We may yet decide to pay one of them out, but I doubt both. No prizes for guessing who.

If they were going to change those rules, surely it would have been announced by now. I doubt they will change it until next season at the earliest.

Something lost on the Ross fan club.

Ross is a very good kick; he had one game where he blazed away a few times and that tag stuck.

Thought White was a tad unlucky with Rawlings retiring, would be a suitable replacement.

Wow, stiff on Lower and Ross. Lower will get snapped up by Freo imo.

It will depend on how his knee holds up I would guess. The problem for Ed with us was our influx of big bodied inside midfielders. With Greenwood, Ziebell and Cunnington stepping up we would have had to re-invent Lower or kept him just for depth. My guess is we are going to try and save as much as possible from mature aged depth players to retain our guns or look to entice another gun over.

If his body can hold up to AFL footy he should be short-listed by GWS and he should play that inside mid role.

not surprised lower, ross, white and norris are gone.
The only one i didn't predict was matt scott, i know he is injured but he played some really solid footy at the start of the year for werribee and we could have kept him on the rookie list for another year if we wanted.

Think the next one to be delisted is pratt, unless another club wants him

The Ross one seems harsh, but can only think its maybe because Macmillan, Mullet, Speight, and Atley are rated ahead of him in impact, ball use/decision making, and all being of similar style, so its tough for him to get a look in.

Pratt wouldn't play Thommo's role so not sure why we wouldn't move Pratt on. I don't mind Pratt, he just doesn't fit well with our current back six.

If Thompson decides to go then the likely replacement for him will be one of the bigger defenders, our group consisting of Hansen, Tarrant, Grima, Car Keys and Cam Delaney. We would likely persist with two of them in the side.

Pratt's main obstacle for a position in the back half will be Macmillan and Mullett. Both can play midfield and probably have more upside in terms of disposal skills.

I still think we will struggle to play with McMahon, Firrito and Pratt in the same side.

McKinley and Urquhart are very lucky boys. We may yet decide to pay one of them out, but I doubt both. No prizes for guessing who.

Possibly, but if we are going to be forced to pay more of our salary cap then it might be feasible to pay out both and have a look at two other kids rather than just over-pay young kids.

A lot depends on how many players GWS/GC have inflated the amount we have had to pay them.

Spot on how many mids can we have ??

A Big defender who can hold his ground would be handy

And a Half back who can kick long

Gav Urquhart could fit the bill if he could find form was one of our bright stars but has lost confidence.
