Theres no sign of local broadcast guarantees at this point. the fixture released is pretty clear on the broadcasts. Maybe further down the track it will be, but not this coming season.

Well, the only reason it wouldn't would be as a negotiated outcome between the AFL, 7 and Foxtel. All else being equal 7 would be eager to show freo women in perth on their multi. I'm pretty sure this coming TV rights deal sees more local games on delay on FTA in WA and SA to encourage more foxtel takeup. The lack of any "sign" certainly does not prevent it from happening, it will because foxtel insists on its exclusivity based on the precaution of the costs it met, and the option to stream that prevent it from happening.

I was a bit surprised there are only 7 rounds. Couldn't there be return matches after the initial 7 rounds? Why are the women not able to play on the big name grounds and thus feature as lead up games to men's matches? This could be similar to when we used to have reserves and under 19s games before a seniors game. The women would then get bigger crowds during their shorter season by playing at the same venues as the men. And why just a grand final and no final series? They could at least have a final four.

A number of issues here.

First, they didn't think womens footy could support having all the top players missing from their regular comps, it would gut them of quality, and they need the good players playing in the state squads to help build the next generation of talent. So for the first few years at least, the AFLW cannot overlap to much the regular season, as its players will be playing both. This limits how long the season can run, it cannot start any sooner, it pushes into the middle of summer and the big bash, and they are getting a pretty short pre season for whats essentially all rookie lists as it is.

Second, having a few curtain raiser games is good for the profile, and gets people to see it who maybe wouldn't otherwise, but having them as regular curtain raisers to pre season mens matches sends a message they do not want to send. This isn't a secondary, or minor mens league, like a reserves or U19s, its the premier womens league. They cannot come to be viewed as a warm up league, female cheerleaders in footy boots. People need to get used to the idea of this as a significant stand alone league in its own right.

Third, they needed clear air, they did not want stories of the womens league competing for space with the mens league, or big bash, and there are limited spots on the calendar.

Fourth, they are trying to tie the games to venues that suit. Its better to have 5000 attend in a 7000 seat venue, than 7000 attend in the MCG. It also makes for a good atmosphere in historic grounds. The last exhibition went really well at Whitten oval apparently, good atmosphere, family friendly crowd, it gives it an old suburban footy league feel that people may enjoy as a change.
