From afl.com.au

"However, reporting officer Rick Lewis said Fletcher was guilty of negligent contact with the umpire because he left himself little room for error by planning to run so close to the umpire in the first place.

'It's similar to driving a car too close to the vehicle in front of you,' he said.

'If you crash into it then you are at fault, that's the risk you take.'"

It's football not a damn highway, being in the vicinity of an umpire when he changes direction should not be a reportable offence.
If this continues it's only a matter of time until a player takes it to court again.

The umpiring fraternity is whining the last few weeks about how no-one likes them and people want to hurt them.

If my mother made such goddam stupid decisions and planned to ruin a game for the sake of how she was percieved I wouldn't be as nice to her either.

We all laugh at soccer players writhing around in agony after a slap in the face, but I have to say, their refs have 20 times the balls ours do, ours wouldn't even walk out on the field in most of the situations those guys do.

I'll make one small concession to the maggots:

They can have their player being suspended rule in, provided:

Umpires are suspended for at least one match whenever they come into contact with the football during general play.
They should not even be in its vicinity and its obviously only negligent umpiring that allows this game interruption.
