im glad sheedy isn't at the club anymore, folau $1million per year for 4 years with his first touch of the footy, disgrace to the league.

hunt very similar.

have mentioned here http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=714137 that our dustin martin should be on 16million per year at the rate this load of rugby bull is going

who would you prefer out of those three.

martin for me, if anyone says otherwise then go barrack for one of them.

It's about marketing worth, not ability. They have to poach these players and pay them extraordinary amounts to compensate them for making the career move and getting the new teams into the headlines of these areas and generate interest and debate.

For the players that they are/will be, which is unproven, they will be grossly overpaid but for the value of marketing just having these players will do for their exposure it's worth it's weight in gold.

its marketable without them, im just too angry now and if i was a current player, 1st second or third year doesn't matter, i would ask for triple what folau is getting, how belittling is it for current players, i think it is.

It's marketable but these guys make it so much more of a headline story to keep interest in the teams, even from NRL lovers who aren't keen on our game.

I think it's an entirely necessary and smart thing for the teams to do, to promote the game.

I don't agree it's belittling but I do see your point of view and it's not wrong.

Just on the two I think GWS getting Folau is a much better option and possibility of being a successful convert than Hunt even with hunt having played it now and then as a junior.

NRL won't be impressed with this. Sheedy will be loving all this attention and drama. It will be interesting to see how long hunt and folau last in the AFL.

I agree with Michael Voss's argument in that the AFL should place that money into developing young players who are already in the system.

Silly thread. As PHX said its about marketing. And Sheeds has pulled of a masterstroke. 6mil is peanuts compared to the exposure AFL will get in the greater west.

Now if only we could sign Billy...

:thumbsu:YEAH it will get them plenty of media exposure and might play a role in getting a few NRL converts to follow their respective clubs, but when it's all said and done, investing a fifth or quarter of your salary cup into players less skilled and less clued than Jake King is a recipe for disaster on many fronts.
It'll be like the old Brisbane Bears days where players eventually decided not to kick it to Warwick Capper who was on substantially more coin then the rest of the playing list and was spent as a player!!!

The more they pay Folau the less there is to entice players like Doc. :thumbsu:

It's a filthy amount of money, but as PR said, it's all about marketing.

I can see it's all about PR, but I honestly don't understand how it can possibly work. Last time I heard figures AFL was pulling what....about 30,000 to 40,000 people to a game as an average. NRL was getting about half that, so if only 20,000 people want to go and watch him play rugby, in a rugby dominated area, what makes them think he'll pull a bigger crowd to an AFL game. Here they are bleeting about Norf Melbuns shite crowds but I can't see GWS being any better.

Being new sides to the comp i think spending that amount on money on Folau and Hunt is okay i got no issues with im happy its only going to help the sport grow and the new teams need to rake fans in with big names. I also don't think they will struggle to much they won't be up there with the best of them but i reckon they will prove to be very handy players.

I'm with PHX - this was pure marketing and it's just an added bonus for them if Folau actually grows into a best-22 player. It is almost embarrassing as an aussie rules fan in NSW that AFL clubs can afford to pay what league clubs could only dream about. It's just a little sad that league has such a poor following despite being at home in the (population-wise) largest state.

I suppose you could look at basketball as being the next level lower in terms of national following and look at the players who have been lured from the court to the oval (Tippett; Vickery; Brogan to a lesser extent in that he played in a championship with the 36ers).

On the positive side, with Folau chewing through $4 million of GWS' salary cap, there will be less in their coffers to splash around on existing clubs' young players. :thumbsu:

i have to laugh, the more money they throw down these rugby league stars throat the less they have to snare one of the real up and coming stars, let them dig there own graves. i for one hope it is successsful move so that the afl wont give them even more concessions but im certainly am not convinced.
