Religion Folau

I was offended because he mentioned atheists, until I realised

a) as an atheist there is no hell
b) I don’t give a shit
That’s what made it funny for me.

Do the majority actually believe that though? Most religious people I know of any faith are rarely as intolerant as the preachy ones who shout the loudest.
According to all the research published - yes - they just keep it behind closed doors and in their community until they start to become a larger voice and gain more of a following which is when they feel comfortable expressing their intolerance. Islam is also the fastest growing religion in the world - what's to be worried about. Where Islam is the majority religion you will find the most intolerance and restrictions on homosexuality and women.

The troubling thing for me in this thread us how people are willing to consent to their own enslavement.
The implications are very obvious if your employer can define your private value system.

Mock him sure his views are offensive, but until he calls for witch hunts ir tries to incite violence by ither means that's the right response.

Most people aren’t the public face of their company though, so the link & reflection is nowhere near as obvious. I don’t think Ted from accounts should be punished in the same manner, unless he was posting truly hateful shit that his employer saw.

It’s all about exposure.

Haven't seen one major sports star from any other religion say this in Autralia.

Anthony Mundine?

“If we were to live in a society, just like in Aboriginal culture, that homosexuality is forbidden and you do it and the consequences are capital punishment or death, you think you are going to do it? Or think twice about doing it?”

“I talk the truth. It is the system. I don’t care if you are gay or not, it doesn’t worry me because the creator will judge you later. If you are going to be gay, do it behind closed doors, that is how it used to be in the olden days.”

Most people aren’t the public face of their company though, so the link & reflection is nowhere near as obvious so the penalties wouldn’t and shouldn’t happen.

It's a line you just can't cross, else next you'll be excluding other minorities on the the same basis.

What have minorities got to do with it?
He’s been told not to post this sort of thing after previous incidents. He has thousands of followers. He’s done it again.

He’s allowed to have his beliefs. His employer who pays him millions and uses him to represent them doesn’t want him to reflect negatively on them by posting discriminating views out in the public.

Million dollar salaries in public roles come with limitations.

If an employee at my place of work were to post that, and somebody reported it to HR, no doubt they would be in danger of losing their job because it would make their LGBT coworkers very, very unwelcome in the workplace.

And he has been bashed from pillar to post by it.
He also isn't employed by anyone. Hense the selfpromoter schtick he has.

If you’re employer is identifiable on your account it definitely gets murky quickly.

Frankly, don’t be a rude campaigner towards other people and if they aren’t hurting you, leave them alone seems like an easy way to avoid any problems.

Not enslavement though. A persons right to their views obviously includes expressing them publicly. That should only be limited in very specific circumstances.
Part of the OP includes Israel expressing opposition to the gay marriage legislation. Limiting him expressing a view on that is clearly unconstitutional.
For the rest if you can't see the problem It's best to leave it at that I think. Troubling though it is.

If he’d said I don’t believe in gay marriage on religious grounds with some background that’s fine. I don’t agree but that’s a perfectly civil way to put your point across.

It’s a far cry from claiming all homosexuals are sinners who should repent to Jesus else face eternity in hell for their actions.

Yer nah.. He was recently given a role on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! ffs... Tell me how getting a paid position on an Australian prime time show (shit show at that) is being bashed pillar to post?

Or what about this 'opinion piece' recently for the Daily Telegraph.

I agree with view on the hypocracy. I'd even advocate shutting down preachers in public places annoying people deliberately because they feel entitled to make a nuisance of themselves.

The thing with social media is it can't intrude unless you choose to let it.

Why?

Is there a crossover between those who believe in hell but also not the rest of that scripture as it suits them that they could feel they were going to heaven and being actively engaged in homosexual activities?

Are we going to see a discrimination case brought against Jesus for excluding homosexual people? Somehow I don't think so, it's not taken seriously enough for that.

This is driven by anti-religious people and that's just fine.

He should be able to say whatever he believes.

I don't agree with him, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to say it.

True.

But Rugby is struggling and the ARU are more than within their rights to maintain a policy of inclusion and to give him the arse for this.

Emu is a bigot trying to turn this into an anti Muslim thing. He is probably one of those cowards he kicked egg boy when he was on the ground. Don't engage

The media should have used the incident to instead direct outrage towards the religions that promote intolerance and hate of minorities and women. Israel Folau is simply a product of his extremist religious upbringing like many others (although the majority are not sports stars it does not make it OK). I don't think we should turn a blind eye to these religions just because they are not shouting their backwards ideologies in public. Allowing these ideas to foster behind closed doors and within small communities presents a bigger problem down the track and makes it way harder to respond to as it gains a foothold and grows.

Yep I'm the bigot for defending gays and women against a religion that in it's own words believes its alright to hit women and kill/discriminate against homosexuals. Sorry buddy but you cannot play the victim card in this case.

you mean every form of christianity?

Seems like a lot of people don't understand what freedom of speech actually is. Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say or do what you want without consequence.
This.

He was free to tweet what he did. It wasn't against the law and he has not been charged by law enforcement last time I checked.

Freedom of speech refers to a legal protection, not a societal one. Freedom of speech in this instance has prevailed.
