I don’t understand the issue? I certainly don’t agree with it and I personally have no time for religion but that’s his opinion and he is following it as guided by many a church.

Catholics thought tribes that had never heard of God and unbaptised babies went to Purgatory instead of Hell. Purgatory is more like a waiting room - no punishments are meted out but no rewards given neither. Dunno if it's still the case but I remember being taught this as a young 'un.

As someone who works in a Catholic school, I know very well that professed Christianity is oftimes more about family, culture and observance than literal interpretation of the bible . The same goes for those of other faiths.
