Opinion Football Feast

Yeah but you just know the AFL would schedule the non-Victorian teams for the least desirable nights. It’s what they do.

I think it’s an overall excellent idea in the OP!

The only thing I can see might get affected is the crowd attendance during the normal hectic weekdays, which are likely to dip drastically more than crowds of weekends attendance.

Thursday nights would be a good starting point. If those numbers are ok, then there’s no reason to think Monday to Wednesday would be any worse, they’re all school nights. Exception being Geelong or regional grounds, you wouldn’t schedule outside the cities mid week.

I hate the bye rounds. A boring handbrake on the football season. So I've solved it for the AFL and they can use this idea for one million dollars.

This is the situation this season: Round 11 is as per normal. Then Rounds 12, 13 and 14 are the bye rounds with six teams having a break each week. Then back into it for Round 15.

So there are 18 games over those three affected weekends. My idea is that instead of bye rounds, we have a Football Feast where there is one game on every night. Eighteen nights of fantastic football action IN A ROW for people to get their winter football fix.

The Big Bash has a great format during the summer and has struck a chord with the public. There is a game on every night of the week. It becomes part of your summer routine. Work or holidays or whatever during the day. Then grab dinner, a few beers and flick on the cricket at night. It's built for the fan, whether at the games or watching on tv. Fill the fridge full of piss and strap into that favourite chair of yours...

In the AFL Football Feast, one game per night would mean that all the clubs get two matches (one home, one away) in prime time. All stand-alone matches too with nothing up against them.

A few qualifiers:
- It would need to be timed so that it coincides with school holidays as the BBL does. So about a month later than now.
- Games would probably need to start at a family friendly 6:30pm rather than 7:10 or 7:40pm.

Instead of a handbrake, it would feel like football is cranking up a notch when in reality the players are still getting their two-games-in-three-weeks midseason breather that they demand. Turning what is a negative into a positive.

A spin off benefit would be that Saturday/Sunday afternoons on those weekends are freed up for local footy. Back to grassroots, show your true colours, where it all began, all that crap.

Here's how it would look using the 2019 draw

Needs to be called “football festivus” to have any credibility.
Winner of each game gets a festivus pole.

The AFL won't mind, they'll just get the 'interstate' clubs to play those nights, who cares if no one is watching as long as the vic clubs have prime time

Theres good ideas and then theres this.

Fantastic idea.

I like it, nothing could be worse than what they do now, but I expect that there will be complaints about people having to go to work the next morning etc. i go to work too, and I would go to the footy regardless, it's all about priorities.

Same issues you have with the BBL. Easy to make it happen though if you work out the right strategy.

I'd stick to 7:10pm starts for the weeknight matches though - happy compromise between people being able to get from work to the matches and not finishing too late for the kiddies.

Its not really about the crowds though its about TV ratings which earns the AFL the most money.

The only issue I see is that different states have different times for School Holidays so if they center it around the Vics it would mean you put the interstate games on the usual Thursday, friday, Saturday, sunday slots

I actually view that as a positive rather than an issue

Each state gets 4 games in 3 weeks, 2 home, 2 away
Just ensure the week there’s no holidays, 1 team is on the bye and the other is away (or playing on the weekend)

My question is, are the weekdays or weekends more desirable for tv ratings?
More people at home on weekdays to drive ratings up....

It’s a great idea. If you made tickets half price for the midweek games and had some other specials around it, it would be a hit

In all seriousness this is an interesting additional concept. For the 3 weeks, have a mini ladder and the team with the best record wins something.
