Essendon were only called the Bombers after WW2.
So go make a logo of their former nickname.
I dare you, I double dare you.

I reckon you could get away with using the same old logo they use :D

Just look at the SANFL:
Centrals were called the Bulldogs because a lot of Poms live in that area.
Port for the same reason as Collingwood I assume.
Norwood because they wear red socks.
Sturt because there were too big universities on Unley Road, one of the colours was light blue and the other navy.

Adelaide Crows are the Crows because it's shortened from Croweaters.

I thought Centrals were called the Bulldogs because they initially played in Footscray jumpers.
And I know that Sturt is Two-Blues because its home ground is "intersected" by two roads named Oxford and Cambridge, and the traditional colours of those are navy and light blue. (It's not quite intersected - if the two roads met, it'd be where the middle of Unley Oval is.)

I have the official word on club nicknames from Col Hutchinson, the Official AFL Historian.

Carlton: Has always been known as the Blues. However, before World War One they were also referred to as the Brewers. After World War Two an attempt was made to change the nickname to the Cockatoos.

Collingwood: A large number of magpies lived on the banks of the Yarra near Victoria Park. The club colours are those of the magpie and the club motto "Floreat Pica" means May the Magpie prosper.

Essendon: The "Same Olds" nickname was to differentiate it from the VFA Essendon. With Essendon Airport being a war time airport in WWII, the Bombers nickname stuck.

Fitzroy: Was orginally the Maroons until the late 1930's to 1957 when the nickname Gorillas was used. The Lion mascot was introduced in 1957 and was immediately popular.

Footscray: Where know as the Tricolours until 1928. That was when a bulldog accidentally lead the team out against Collingwood.

Geelong: Were know as the Pivotonians because Geelong was the hub of primary and secondary industry in the Western Districts of Victoria. During a Collingwood v Hawthorn Reserves match a black cat was amongst the players at three-quarter time. Once the match started again the team the cat was near suddenly played well and won the game. The Herald cartoonist of the time Sam Wells took this idea further and did a cartoon suggesting if Geelong had a black cat they may defeat Carlton. After losing five of seven games Geelong defeated Carlton. Then replicas of cats were everywhere around the club.

Hawthorn: Were know as the Maybloomers as the club had the same colour as the flowers. When they wore the Gold jumpers with brown V they were called the Mustard Pots. In 1942 Roy Cazaly decided the club needed a more aggressive image, so the Hawk became the new symbol.

Melbourne: Was known as the Redlegs or Fuchsias until 1933. During a half time break, then coach Frank "Checker" Hughes said to the players, "You are playing like a lot of flowers! Lift up your heads and play like Demons."

North Melbourne: The Shinboners nickname was to give the team a tough image. It also could have been because of the players used to kick opposition players in the shins. The Kangaroo was introduced in 1954 to give the team a more suitable image.

Richmond: Were known as the Yellow and Black Angels until 1920. They were sometimes know as the Wasps. The tigers nickname came about through a supporter who could afford to get into the ground, he instead sat in a tree outside the Punt Road Oval and watched. He associated the clubs colours with those of a tiger and would shout "Eat ém alive , Tigers!" He became a cult hero and the Tigers the club nickname.

St. Kilda: Was in early times associated with Seagulls. An attempt was name to use Panthers. The logical name, Saints became popular 60 years ago.

South Melbourne/Sydney: Orginally know as the Southerners, the Bloods or the Blood Stained Angels. After an influx of Western Australian recruits, the club was dubbed the Swans.

A couple of contradictions in there from what I've read, I'm not 100% convinced even if it is Col Hutchison giving explanations.

I read in a biography of Ken McIntyre (he of the finals systems bearing his name) that as a boy he was the one responsible for the Cats name.

Rhett Bartlett compiled a history of Richmond and the guy sitting in the tree shouted "Go, my Yellow and Black Angels!" - not "Eat em alive"! I think Col mixed up his anecdotes there.

As Col is a Geelong supporter I would believe he story. He is also the writer of the Geelong history. However, with the Richmond story, I would believe Rhett Bartlett's story. The Eat 'em alive Tigers story does sound a bit to good to be true.

To get this thread back onto Football Logos I will ask people to post the best football club logo they have ever seen and/or the worst football club logo they have ever seen.

One of my main dislikes is teams calling themselves the "Roos" instead of "Kangaroos".

How many of these logos were officially used by Geelong, and have you ever redrawn them?

Definitely the last 4, and most likely the other 3.
Col Hutchison is Geelong's historian and the club listen to his direction on all things heritage related.
(Other clubs don't pay much mind to their historians)
I have to admit logos from before the VFL Licensing Agreement in 1976 are not my thing.
Where the jumpers have been public access at the State Library, often the logos used only by the clubs you have to go through the letterheads of old documents for each club, at that club.
