AFL Chasing Greg Swann To Partner Laura Kane In Revamped Football Role

Brisbane Lions chief executive Greg Swann is the primary target to lead a revamped AFL football operations department.

The Herald Sun can reveal Swann, 63, is strongly considering leaving the Lions to fill the newly-created position of executive general manager of football performance at AFL headquarters.

The highly-respected Lions CEO took charge of the stricken Queensland club in July 2014, overseeing a remarkable rebuild that culminated in last year’s premiership.

He has previously been CEO at Collingwood and Carlton.

Swann would run the AFL’s football department in partnership with Laura Kane, whose role was split in half on Thursday under a major shake-up of Andrew Dillon’s struggling executive team.

Swann would be responsible for match reviews, umpiring, game analysis, player movement, laws of the game, innovation and club engagement, while Kane will oversee the operations of the AFL, AFLW, VFL, VFLW, Coates Talent League and the game’s response to health and concussion.

It was Swann who made the bold but spectacular decision to seek out former Hawthorn football operations boss Chris Fagan to coach the Lions in October 2016.

Dillon has moved quickly to shore up his executive ranks after months of turmoil and controversy.

Dillon is also in the market for a chief operating officer to bolster his front bench.

Western Bulldogs chief Ameet Bains, Swans boss Tom Harley and Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick have been linked to the 2IC role.

Clubs are also busy canvassing options to replace AFL Commission chairman Richard Goyder.

Former Collingwood president Jeff Browne, Swans chairman Andrew Pridham and ex-Bulldogs premiership president Peter Gordon are all being urged to make a run.

Another faction of club bosses and current commissioners want former Geelong president Craig Drummond to replace Goyder.

One plan would see Goyder’s anointed successor serve the 2026 season as a chairman-elect, but others believe he needs to move on this year.

This might be quite brilliant for us if it happened. Swanny has become such a staunch defender of the academies in his time up here, and would be able to push that case at AFL house.

He's just about at the end of this run at any rate, so for him to move into a role of wider influence at AFL HQ could only be good for the club and our future.

Might be time to hit up David Noble to give up the cars and take on the Lions CEO role... IIRC he was posited as a candidate in the past.

Malthouse on ABC sport radio earlier today
Rates: Dogs, Pies, Cats
Doesn't rate: Lions, Giants
Banging on about how good Essendon were on Thursday; how it was their best performance of the year.

Still in need of a psychologist. Tool

Probably got a case of the Biden's and doesn't remember we have beaten both the Cats and Dogs this season.

Lions BigFooty Board: Does not rate Malthouse.

To be fair to Mick, we’ve played a lot of garbage football this year and if I was a neutral, I’d probably be thinking along similar lines.
We have played a lot of garbage football along with some sensational football.

Logan Morris

The Lions haven’t had many huge improvers in 2025 given how elite the side already was last season, but one that’s taken a big step is young forward Logan Morris.
The 20-year-old is averaging 1.8 goals a game compared to the 1.3 he kicked each outing last year. He’s also averaging more disposals, tackles and inside 50s than he did in his debut season.
While his progress is pretty linear for a player who’s moving from his first to second season, Morris has been much more of a focal point for a Brisbane side without Joe Daniher.
Even though that means more footy has gone his way, the pressure on him has no doubt increased while the opposition are putting in more effort to shut him down.
Expect him to continue going up from here.

I agree with Malthouse, watching how we have played in our games we would and have been belted by Collingwood, we play a lot of lazy football and pressure in our forward line can be non existent.

There's no premiership up for grabs in May.

Lets see how we're looking in August & September.

As others have said though we've won 4 of the 5 tough games we've had so far. So that only really leaves Collingwood and maybe Adelaide you could rate above us

So if we're rubbish then so are 15 other teams

I'm on board with that.

The Pies are playing unbelievable footy atm , as if they're on something with the precision of their kicking.

The form when they belted us stacks up as the right form. The question is they can only get worse from here you would think and then how much better can we get ? If Doedee could be near as good as he was ( huge query ),Kiddy could get back to near where he was ( possible ) and Starcevich comes back as good as he was ( also possible ), that adds a lot more steadiness and firepower.

Daniher leaves a big hole that Day can potentially limit if he also stands up ( questionable ).

Last year's finals series was like a dream sequence and we know now the Swans are rubbish.

I think we can roll Geelong on a neutral ground. No one will roll the Pies if they keep this form up but I'm hoping for vibes of the Swans first half in 2024. Adelaide is right in it in my view if they can withstand real pressure.

Hmm, dire times for the Wizz. Loved him as a kid, wish him all the best. Is it CTE or something else for years on end here tho? Probably a little from column A & B.

I’m not totally convinced…I have had more to do with him than most. I’m not sure he’s 100% genuine.

I was wearing my Newcastle (EPL) shirt today, and my daughter asked my why I was wearing a Collingwood shirt. 😢😤
After I moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne I actually gifted my father (a Collingwood supporter) a NUFC shirt as a joke :p
