Anyone know why club's allow like 200 odd people onto the ground to form a wall between the race and banners these days?

Must admit, I find it excessive - its one thing having those misfit cheerleader types, who lets be honest are the motliest of motley people that hold the banner up, but the throngs of people I just don't get.

Yes, I get its a bit of a shouting at clouds type thing, but I've only really noticed it in recent weeks across the whole comp, which I know we've been doing for ages it seems.
It’s as pretty big thing for diehard fans to be let on the field and a super way to engage with supporters and kids. Cost nothing, hurts no one.

My niece ran on with Carlton recently. Massive highlight for her.

Not talking about the kids running out with the players; just the other throngs of people.

Problem is; we had people a few times at the Gabba then coming back whilst the game just started all trying to find their seats blocking our views whilst they sat their arses down. Another pet peeve of mine.

Darryl McD-W, now at Redland, just involved in a Maynard-Brayshaw type incident in his QAFL prelim. Jumped to smother a handball and his momentum took him into the oncoming Morningside player, who was laid out. Absolutely a football act, but it'll probably cost him a grand final.

By my count, the following Lions are eligible:

Vic - Answerth, Berry, Doedee, Dunkley, Fort, Gardiner, Lester, Lloyd, Lohmann, McCluggage, McInerney, McLachlan, Morris, Rayner, Ryan, Wilmot (I suspect only Dunkley, McCluggage and Rayner would get close to getting a jumper)

WA - Ah Chee, Craven, Robertson, Starcevich, Torrent, Tunstill, Zakostelsky (the rate we're going, we'll probably only have Torrent and Zakostelsky on our list by then of the WA boys)

And Oscar Allen and possibly Ridley

We can’t get the basics right of running this sport and are focused on adding in exhibition matches. Sad face.

February? Why bother? Same problem as always - players won't play due to fear of injury. Care factor from any state not involved will be limited.
It's an exhibition match. These are always bruise free footy, and in pre-season it will be get another opportunity to have a run around. We will never get back to what it was in the 80's...and what it was in the 80's may be overstated in my memory because all footy was good footy.

I think if they play one of these matches every year, move them around the country, there's always people who will watch - some people are desperate for any footy in February.

“There’s a lot to play out with Tassie,” Whateley told SEN Crunch Time.
“I think the stadium is in significant jeopardy, more so than ever before.

“There’s a report that’s due at the end of September, which I think is going to challenge the politics around it more severely than has happened - it has bipartisan support for the time being.
“I wonder when that report lands, from what I’m told, whether bipartisan support will survive that, and then what that ultimately means.

I would not be interested in SOO, I'd be too worried about one of our star players copping a bad injury.

The AFL do not need origin like the NRL does, we have marquee blockbuster games that draw massive crowds and interest all through the season eg. big Melbourne club rivalries, The Showdown, Derby, Battle of the Bridge, Banana Drama all x 2 games.

When the big Melbourne clubs travel to non Victorian venues these are massively popular games as well.

100% agree. Especially as a south Aussie whos state would get smashed constantly

How much footy content do people want. We have 24 rd season. 4 weeks of finals. 4 weeks of trade and draft. 4 weeks of preseason stuff.

I’d like to know what data the AFL has to demonstrate that what people REALLY want is a frothy pointless exhibition match in February.

They’d be better of devising a modified preseason competition where the winner gets pick 25 in the next years draft or something.

Yes, the AFL want to be on the radar 24/7 x 365.

Personally I think if they went silent or near enough to it for a couple of months during the off season it would build the anticipation and whet the appetite for footy to an even higher degree.

Too much of a good thing is not always a good thing:think:... as my x wife used to say.🤷‍♂️

I think the H&A season is too long. 24 rounds with a bunch of pointless rounds through the middle of the season when the grind begins, to come down to a 4-week sprint at the end. Too much for me.
it will never change because of the media rights and the $$$$AFL$$$$, but play everyone once then into finals is all I would want. Then every game counts.

These pointless exhibition matches are a desperate attempt to create more value for the next deal. I think the next deal will not be as glamorous as the last, probably making Dillon nervous.
