Yes, the article gives supporters outside of Brisbane the reasonable impression that we stuffed up.
However, anyone that follows the trades and the draft knew the Lions were extremely tight on list spots. The Adams decision was made much later.
It we decided to go after Jones and were successful we would not have got McKenna.

The Club rightly left it up to Marcus to decide his 2023 paying future.
When that decision was made, we did not have a lot to choose from in the SSP.

They mentioned 2 positions on the commission have been vacant for over 12 months.
You would think if Matthews was interested, he would have been headhunted by now.
Matthews is probably happy with his current work/life balance situation.

liam jones was never a world beater as a player, will be 32 years old by the time the season starts and has already spent a year out of the afl system. think it was silly for footscray to offer him 3 years and would have considered it poor list management if we had tabled an offer like that to him. personally would not play him ahead of either of payne or andrews and probably not gardiner either if he is actually fit this year

Would be very interesting to what our new gabba tenancy deal will be that they were negotiating at the end of last year. Wonder if it's done yet. We rolled to month by month leases on all our locations bar Springfield in lions shop and vic hq. I wonder whether SQ and the qld govt will favour giving us a much better stadium deal this round so we can better our financial position and thereby reduce any financial compensation they may need to dish out during the gabba rebuild. Wonder what the club is or has been pushing for. The prospect of making a series of large profits in the next few years while we're contenders and crowds are good would be nice, in order to smash that debt down significantly.

But that attracts less money from the AFL so it's a balancing act.

This year's financials are going to be fascinating as the only real insight on where that balance falls unfortunately.

Will be interesting to see what the Springfield gym generates us as well. I don't know the economics of gyms at all so will be fascinating to see if that's a good income generator for our half of that business

I don't see being located at Springfield will relieve our debt situation.
Staying a top 4 and or top 8 side will help greatly.
That all but guarantees a good membership figure and crowd attendance at home and away games.

The game day fees at the Gabba will remain about the same, possible a little more.
We won't have to pay for the other facilities the players used at The Gabba like the Gym, meeting rooms etc etc.
Those costs would have been substantial.
The Lions shop is staying there for now but that comes with room rental, wages insurance etc.

However, The Gabba gym, meeting rooms etc saving, will be offset by the Lions having to maintain the new large facility at Springfield.
This cost could be more than the Gabba charged.
The new 50/50 partnership with Total Fusion will spread the costs and generate some income for the Gym building.
For the remainder of Brighton Homes Arena, the Lions will be up for lots of expenses for the facility.
The Admin part of wages should remain steady in line with previous years.
But you will have groundman and other facility staff that will be extra.
Insurance, maintenance for the ground and buildings are extra. Lots of other hidden costs.

Income from the cafe and bar will be offset by wages, license fees etc.etc. It is hard to make a profit in hospitality.
The club may have put the cafe out to tender and charge them rent, but i am not sure it they have done that.

Each year it will likely be 5 AFLW games and hopefully a final game with 1 AFL preseason game.

Income from say the Geelong game will be from car park fees, ground catering, bar, cafe and merchandising. Tickets are free.

Then the gabba will be a full saving. Plus increased revenue from naming rights etc.

I hope you are right and the difference in the previous leases costings is less than the additional expenses running Brighton Homes Arena.
I still think the running of the new venue will be way more than people think.
Will have to wait till next year's financial report to see how we are travelling.
Hopefully we make 2 finals so it will be a fair comparison.

Winners and losers: The 2023 AFL club funding ladder revealed

As the AFL finalises the variable funding for 2023, The Age can reveal what the clubs have been told they will receive. Shedding light on the figures has prompted Collingwood president Jeff Browne to call on the AFL to do something about the funding chasm.

The AFL has not yet finalised the salary cap amount for 2023, as negotiations continue with the players’ union (the AFL Players’ Association), which is why the base funding amount is estimated in a range between $10.5 million and $11 million. The clubs have been told to budget for a salary cap increase of 5 per cent. This will be funded in the base amount for all clubs.

Half of the 18 AFL clubs will receive less than the annual salary cap, which was $14.7 million in 2021.

Hi Peeps, I haven't been around for a while and this is most probably in the wrong thread, I'm not thinking too straight right now, so forgive me please...

...you see, I said goodbye to my darling Mr MM 10 days ago and his funeral was last friday. Its been a 6mths. He had his first indication something was

very wrong the night before mums funeral, was so sick he couldn't go to it. I buried mum then came home to Mr MM getting sicker by the day. He had

oesophical cancer which spread to his liver. Docs gave him 6 - 18mnths. Its been horrible to see him go down like he did. In the end he went suddenly

when his heart gave up with all the treatment. He was as weak as a kitten. He hated being like it. He collapsed at home and its something I''l never forget.

I now realise he went the best way, before he got to the long drawn out painful stage..

..one of the saddest parts was when he said to me only a couple of days before he died "I"m not going to see a Saints Grand Final am I" (that part was hard to write)

Im ok.Im getting there.... just little things get to me like writing that last bit. Watching Saints games will be sad, not sure how I'll go.... in fact not sitting side by side in our chairs watching our games will be tough..

My family have been fantastic, they've been coming and going since the night he died. None of them live in Melb. In fact my granddaughter and her family arrived on the night at 2.30am after a 5hr drive to get here..

Im spending Xmas at her place..

I just wanted to wish you all a happy and safe Xmas. Hold your loved ones tight.

Is this going all too far? Life is a risk, you can't eliminate it. You take a risk when you hop in your car or ride your bike.

I know it is different for kids but if you are a sound of mind adult and you participate in an activity you should be aware of the risks and be cognizant of possible outcomes.

There is only so "safe" a sporting organisation can make its product, as long as they have adequate insurance for injured players possible medical costs.

We all played footy day and night ,kick to kick on a concrete road to packs when I was a kid. No one got injured to my knowledge ,obviously they could've.

But I did know 3 schoolmates who suffered traumatic brain injuries growing up. One fell off his bike , another in a road accident and someone who tried shimmying up a large neighbour's gate for a lark and it fell on him.

Every sport is risky. I hardly know of any skier who hasn't done something to their knee over time , sometimes with disastrous outcomes. Don't even start on other alpine sports. Surfing is dangerous .I knew of one guy at uni who got killed by a direct hit bouncer playing bush cricket .

It doesn't mean we shouldn't mitigate risks . But there'll be nothing left to do and enjoy if we eliminate anything that's risky. I would've thought schoolgirls playing footy was fairly low in that category. From what I've seen of the younger girls who play for fun it's basically non contact/low contact.
