People get threatened to be sued all over SM but it never amounts to anything.

Made it look official enough at least, club got my address and mailed me an official looking letter on the clubs letterhead, delete the post within x days or y will happen, scared me enough into deleting the post and that was that.

They're perfectly capable of having the post deleted themselves aren't they.

There are literally millions of tweets go up around the world every day . Some of them say the most outrageous ,libellous and straight out untruthful things about people or organisations but you hardly hear of anyone getting sued. Suing someone for something said on SM is not anything any competent lawyer would recommend.

I’m genuinely struggling to think of subject matter that would cause a club to threaten legal action.

If it was such a serious matter, I’d be inclined to believe there would be some truth in what was being said.

It was a rumour involving Wayne Carey while he played for Adelaide, that's how long ago it was!

It’s true. I’m currently in court with BRAB and Nunez for the things they’ve said about me.

Below article on additional AFL revenue from betting.
No wonder the AFL are happy for Channel 7 to bombard people with AFL betting adds during the games.
I don't have Fox or Kayo so can't comment of what adds are shown between quarters.

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan has confirmed the organisation receives a cut of gambling turnover on its matches beyond official sponsorship deals with wagering companies.

“We have product fee arrangements with all the wagering operators where we get a percentage of their operations on the AFL,” McLachlan told a parliamentary inquiry into online gambling harm.

Pity no-one bets on the Smith Family. They could use the money.

From the parliamentary enquiry into sports betting I believe today. This is from Sportsbet trying to justify banning people who win and not answering the question

I've answered your question. How you take it is up to you lol.

No you didn't answer a question, you just repeated a pre rehearsed speech over & over again.

I did this while at uni very successfully. Eventually they either ban your account completely or reduce your maximum bet amount by 98-99%.

I hate gambling and wish it were banned.

I place $1 bets so don't have a lot riding on this pardon the pun. Wouldn't care in the slightest if gambling was outlawed, but that won't stop it, illegal gambling would still be rife.

I do think it would be great if the industry was highly regulated though. No more banning Dustin Hoffman just because he can count cards. If Elixuh knows the odds & can place win / win bets then that's on you sportsbet. Betting companies need to stop being able to make their own rules.

I posted this on the mainboard...agree you'll never get rid of it, but the way gambling is advertised should be gutted.

The issues are intertwined because the more the gambling companies can make the more the AFL makes, but the way gambling in this country is peddled needs to be gutted. How much is enough for the AFL? The bloke or lady you sit next to at the footy might have a gambling addiction... they already pay for membership, merch, concessions at the ground etc etc...how much more does the AFL need to suck out of fans.

I would prefer to donate a footy to my kids Auskick than have it be paid for by the AFL via money won from some poor person with a gambling addiction who wants to support their team but is also peddled gambling ads every 2 seconds. Do we as fans actually want all this stuff paid for by gamblers in-part as a result of an over-aggressive bombardment of advertising?

I thought it was bad 10 years ago, but now its infiltrated nightly tv shows and they even run some standalone show on fox with Stevie J now.

My cousin's job is informing his clients on what he considers a good investment/gamble on horse racing.
That is his fulltime job, but he also has a bet himself.
It is not a numbers game for him but lots of video watching and of course over the years he has made quite a few contacts in the industry.
It has become nearly impossible for him to place a bet with these online betting agencies as he is banned from doing so.
He does resort to third party people betting for him on occasions but that is a big hassle.
Mostly it is on track betting for him but i believe there are hardly any bookmakers left.

So basically, if you are a regular winner on these betting sites you are either banned or restricted on the amount you can wager.
They only want losers, and it does not have to be much lost either. But multiply that by millions of punters and it is a lot of money.
Certainly, enough to warrant saturation advertising and additional incentive to the AFL and i assume the other codes also.

The gambling advertising is out of control and i notice a few people in various forms of government are concerned.
What happens about it is anybody's guess.

last time i went to a h&a game the experience was significantly diminished because the group behind my brother and i were screaming and swearing about players meeting and not meeting the statistic thresholds they had placed in their multi. abusive language about players who werent getting 25 disposals or whatever. i think the environment at the games would be a lot better if it did not have groups sweating over these ridiculous multi bets that lose significantly more than they win. the spiel of odds by clowns like nathan brown before the game commences and during breaks should go at the very least

I had a shocking experience at the Richmond game last year at the G - lots of swearing about umpires, and also listening to what looked like barely out of school kids talk loudly about their multis.

I came up in an era where the races were just about the biggest sport going and have experience as a professional gambler .

The landscape's changed since the Corporates took over betting in this country and everywhere else really.

I personally can't get a bet on with a Corporate. They want every little punter who consistently loses and don't let anyone on who looks like they might win.

They're not bookmakers , they're accounting firms who work off slim margins by getting as many people who know nothing to bet consistently.

The evidence given by the Sportsbet guy in Parliament was embarrassing.

I absolutely love a bet ,it's in my blood , there are many hard workers and great people in the racing industry and despite negative publicity it's a fantastic , generous industry to be involved with . The romance of the turf that I grew up with has long gone , but the passion and work ethic of the people who invest and put the show on hasn't.

As soon as Sports betting became a thing was the death knell for gambling in this country . The corruption as we've seen in places like India ,the UK and the subcontinent is light years ahead of anything I've ever seen in racing. It also preys on a whole new breed of young people who are obviously entertained but can easily get themselves in trouble. They should ban advertising from corporates full stop.

2 things. Firstly you'll never stop it whatever happens . And it does entertain many millions of people who control their outlays.

Governments and now the Sports themselves make so much money off it that walking it back would be a very tough pill for them to swallow. And if the Governments , particularly State Governments stop getting the gambling taxes , which are considerable, they'll have to find some other way of bringing in the revenue.

Had a friend whose job for a while (while finishing his phd) was a third party putting on bets for a gambling group. He would effectively sit in the pub/tab for hours a week and then put on bets when ever he got the call. He would effectively just pump in as many bets as possible, that were under a certain $ cut off point, until the market would get closed. There are so many systems out there to try and exploit the market while the companies would try and close every loophole they could see. He also helped to "buy" sports betting accounts off people who didnt use them so they could play arbitrage between companies until they would all eventually get locked out.

He now works for Sports Bet writing models for various sports
