Not too much we did not know in relation to goal scoring.
Just need to replace Gunstons 22 goals.
Will the Lions just try and spread the goals around or look for another player in the preseason games?
If someone stands out in preseason games, then who makes way from that Grand final side.
As a reminder Gunston played 17 games, the last being round 22. He kicked 22 goals 14 behinds.

BRISBANE
Most goals:
Charlie Cameron (360)
Players with 100-plus career goals: 8 (Charlie Cameron, Joe Daniher, Eric Hipwood, Dayne Zorko, Lincoln McCarthy, Zac Bailey, Lachie Neale, Cam Rayner)
Players with 50-plus goal seasons: 2 (Charlie Cameron - 4 times, Joe Daniher - 2 times)
Leading goalkicker in 2023: Joe Daniher (61)
Average goals kicked in 2023: 13.8 (second most)
Players with 20-plus goals in 2023: 7 (Joe Daniher, Charlie Cameron, Eric Hipwood, Zac Bailey, Lincoln McCarthy, Cam Rayner, Jack Gunston)

6 of those were against a hopeless West Coast. Take those out and it is 16 in 16 games. I don't think we will have trouble replacing those. Even if we don't replace the goals, last season IMO showed that we can more than make up for that with defensive run.

Pies fans always good for a laugh see link below. You would think winning the GF would be enough.

On Monday i had lunch with some family including my 74-year-old sister-in-law who is a mad Pies supporter.
She recently got a Magpie tattoo on the inside of her arm and showed it off proudly. Her first tattoo.
To keep family peace i did not tell her it looked like a cross between a Magpie and a Crow.
Reason being it was all black with no white.

Plus our forward line has been our massive strength over the last 2-3 years. Even if we lost 1 goal a game (but tightened up in defence for example), we would still be outscoring most clubs and could be better off overall.

Interesting thought regarding Gardiner.

Player to bounce back from a tough 2023:
Jack Payne

Jack Payne had his best season at the level in 2023, playing 23 games.

While he showed that he could be a star defender in this league, his season was still a tough one to swallow as he missed the Preliminary and Grand Finals with an ankle injury.

Entering 2024 at age 24, Payne is primed to become one of the game’s best backmen. After missing out on much of September last year, that could be the fuel that fires another career-best campaign.

Young player to watch: Jaspa Fletcher

The father-son pick showed some serious signs of star potential in 2023, playing the last 14 games of the season including the Grand Final.

His breakout performance came in the Qualifying Final against Port Adelaide, kicking three goals.

Drafted as a midfielder, Fletcher could look to make a wing position his own in 2024 and he looks set to go to a new level as a result.

Player likely to lose his spot in the 22: Jarryd Lyons

Jarryd Lyons started as Brisbane’s tactical substitute in the Grand Final and was either subbed on or off in eight of his 10 games in 2023.

Entering 2024 aged 31, Lyons could start to see himself play even more VFL footy than he did in 2023 - despite winning the JJ Liston Trophy at the level - as Brisbane looks to bring some fresh faces through the midfield.

Fringe player who will play 15+ games: Darcy Gardiner

The solid defender was the man who replaced Payne in the Preliminary Final and Gardiner didn’t let his team down in both September games he played in.

Showing that he’s still at the level, the Lions could use Gardiner as a lockdown option, allowing both Harris Andrews and Payne to peel off even more than they did in 2023.

It could give the side some decent flexibility in defence if Gardiner becomes more of a permanent fixture in the 22.

Guessing that would be at the expense of Lester?

I think the articles author would be thinking along those lines.
I imagine Doedee gets the gig when ready.
On 2023 form Lester over Gardiner but that's last year.

Doedee: 27 in March, 190cm, 90kg
Gardiner: 28 in March, 192cm, 91kg
Lester: 31 in March, 192cm, 84kg

Nothing that WA and Qld teams are not aware of each year.
Still nice to see someone puts in a bit of time to show interstate travel airtimes.
They did not include travel time to and from airport and sitting around waiting for flights.

21 hours to 96 hours.
Such a fair competition!🤔

“If you get 1% of the population of America to care about AFL it’s more than the whole population of Melbourne,” Cox added.
.................................
If only we got 1% of China population in the Port experiment.
That would be 14 million, so quite a few Melbourne's.

Hi everyone, I am not sure where exactly to post this but I have some old newspapers from the 2003 Premiership Win (Specifically part of the Sunday Mail and the Herald Sun)
Does anyone still collect that sort of stuff from the Premiership era? (I also have the DVD's of the 3-peat)

My daughter is off to two of these Taylor Swift concerts.
The AFL season starts 3 weeks later.
..........................
“It's just massive. Building the seating plan, we obviously have people on the turf, but it's really around the stage production – 70 semi-trucks coming onto your ground is quite confronting, and you've got six days of set-up, three concerts across Friday, Saturday, Sunday evening, two or three days of pack-down.

Hopefully the bloke 6 from the left, doesn’t make it a 2 peat.
Amazing how he still looks the same nowadays from 20 years ago.

Gotta love Fly, even if he is coaching our Victorian arch-nemesis ;)

Cornes weird thinking at it again.
He suggests the Lions go even smaller in the forward line and drop Hippy.
Leave Jo surrounded by smalls and medium smalls, and we will be better in 2024 in his opinion.
Apart from Lohmann i don't know who he thinks we have playing in the VFL to take Hippy's place.

Maybe he forgot Jo actually goes into the ruck.
Cornes was an all-Australian selector so you would think he was aware of this fact.
It might make a little more sense if he mentioned we would need to add a 2nd ruck to cover that issue, but he did not.

So Cornes must want Lohmann for Hippy and no 2nd ruck when Jo does ruck relief. That then gives us 6 small forwards.
Or even though he did not mention it Fort/Smith/Lane for Hippy.

All Kane wants is people to click through for him to get that sweet sweet advertising dollar. He couldn't care less about what any club actually does.

I agree.
And yet he still has enough cred to get on the all-Australian selection panel in 2023 which is surprising seeing who else would be available.
I don't use social media or listen to podcasts but always read SEN articles about AFL.
So Cornes pops up regularly there.

i imagine the cornes who goes to AA selection panel is very different from the personality that appears on SEN

mind you i think there is a fair bit of politicking to AA selections - SA and WA would demand representation on the panel and accordingly i think push for players from their own state to be selected. serong being picked for the team over neale / liberatore last year would i imagine be a result partly being reached from WA having no representative in the team without serong's inclusion

we should really push for a queenslander to be on the panel

In 2023 there were 9 on the selection panel plus Gil as chairman.
You would think it would be easy enough to find 1 from each state plus 4 others.
State representation at least gives them a chance to argue for someone worthy.
They may not sway the vote, but it is a fairer system.

The other issue is midfielders regularly gobble up hybrid positions to justify a way to get them into the side.
I don't see that changing either.

Debate about who misses out will continue and the AFL is all about grey arears and more talk in the media.

Cornes again but story confirmed.
................
Editor of the AFL Record and the AFL Season Guide Ash Browne confirmed the change was a league directive.

“Yeah it’s true. It’s a new AFL policy to not reveal player weights – I’m just a messenger here, by the way. This was an AFL decision,” Browne said.

“They’ve decided in this day and age it is inappropriate for weights to public matter, in a publication like the Season Guide.

........................

At this point in time player weights both men and women are still listed on club sites under Teams.
So, maybe it will only be in the Season Guide and Game Day Record.

It is the AFL so it's a wild guess as to the reasoning behind this decision.

The weights were never accurate anyway and you can pretty easily get an idea of how big and strong players are by looking at them

Can't see an issue unless you're a traditionalist for the sake of it
I am so far removed from being a traditionalist, but still think the weight of a player is important.
However, if players weights are taken from all sites i will not lose any sleep over it.
I just don't understand their logic in doing so, in what is a contact sport for elite sports people.

Without being certain i believe all players returning to preseason training would have to weigh in.
If clubs believe it is important why can't the supporters know should they wish to glance at the weight.
The listed weight may be not quite accurate, but it would be fairly close.

Fans pay money for the Record and Season Guide to read about the players.

If weight is not important because you can "get an idea""by looking at them" so is their height. So, why not get rid of that too.
