A certain amount of risk is good for a child's development, climbing, throwing, jumping, balancing, acrobatics etc. it's how they learn physical limits and how to be safe.We all played footy day and night ,kick to kick on a concrete road to packs when I was a kid. No one got injured to my knowledge ,obviously they could've.
But I did know 3 schoolmates who suffered traumatic brain injuries growing up. One fell off his bike , another in a road accident and someone who tried shimmying up a large neighbour's gate for a lark and it fell on him.
Every sport is risky. I hardly know of any skier who hasn't done something to their knee over time , sometimes with disastrous outcomes. Don't even start on other alpine sports. Surfing is dangerous .I knew of one guy at uni who got killed by a direct hit bouncer playing bush cricket .
It doesn't mean we shouldn't mitigate risks . But there'll be nothing left to do and enjoy if we eliminate anything that's risky. I would've thought schoolgirls playing footy was fairly low in that category. From what I've seen of the younger girls who play for fun it's basically non contact/low contact.
