That sounds like something my grandmother would've done......wasn't your fault the stupid chook broke your watch.
...when I was about 4-5 and staying at my nana and pop's, they had their chook pen up against a side fence.....anyway, there was a smallish hole in the back of the corrugated iron shed. Nana made me go with her to get the eggs, toughen me up you see......as I was nervously standing there with all these goddam feathered monsters around pecking at me, I happened to look at the hole and spotted a snake slithering past between the shed and fence..
Nana didn't believe me and sent me inside, thinking I was being a scaredy cat again.......surprise, surprise, there was a big commotion in the chook shed a bit later on, and guess what, there was a snake in there and nan had to kill it as pop wasn't home..
She was a good nan, but they were tough back in those days..
