My thoughts are this is a load of crap re Lyons
1. Who knows what the rules will be next year, next they will say we miss seeing the inside bull types winning the ball, lets change it again.
2. He is an excellent read of the play and is key often in preventing turnovers and locking it in our fwd half
3. He can kick goals or dish off a handball from a fwd stoppage.

I woukdve thought a more apt observation is if theres going to be more scores from turnovers, get rid of the players who cough it up like Birchall fpr no reason and leave Lyons to keep being a boss

It's a little worrying if Dixon is right, given he specifically named Jarryd Lyons as someone who could be caught out by the way the game is heading. But maybe he's got more strings to his bow, after all he did play pretty impressively against Collingwood.

It's also funny that the Fox Sports homepage referred to Ben Dixon as a "former AFL great", just like calling everyone who has ever made an AFL list a "star".

Weird article. I don't think Lyons is only an inside mid. He racks up the footy around the ground. His main issue is his acceleration limiting how quickly he can transition from inside to outside and offence to defence.

There will always be a need for contested inside mids, we can't be a team of outside seagulls like Jared Polec or Aaron Hall.

Slow plodding in-and-under blokes from yesteryear, Diesel, Plough, TShaw et al, plied their trade in an era when there were half the number of stoppages of what we see today and it didn't prevent them from being stars of the game. Smart footballers will always find a way and I think JLyons is a smart footballer.

Maybe a similar article was written in 2018 about Lyons, and the Suns coach and board took it as gospel
We know how that turned out for them

Why wouldn't he bring up someone like Matthew Rowell who goes pick 1 based on contested footy?
Because Rowell can play inside and out, run both ways, has more vision and skill than Lyons, and kick goals.

He hasn’t had a decent run at it at AFL level, but if you watched him as a junior, you’d know why.

In 2018 NAB League final he played mostly outside and on the wing, and still won best on ground.

In 2019 NAB League final he did everything, including kicking a 55 meter goal off his non preferred left foot, as he was being closed down from the right.

Still wouldn't make the Sydney squad from the weekend's game.

Seems at least as reliant on contested footy as Lyons. Has a higher % of his possessions from contested footy.

Just because Sydney has won a few games using recently enhanced options (ie the rule changes) doesn't mean that that is the only way to play or that it is the ever-set-in-stone-wave-of-the-future... there have been teams that locked everything in and so everybody locked everything in ... until someone found a way around it ... same with every other innovation.

The trick is to play to your strengths in such a way that other people's strengths can't kill you. Case in point this weekend vs the dogs - two different strategies on display and whoever both executes their own strategy best while simultaneously reducing the effectiveness of the other sides' strategy will most likely win the game. We don't want to play like the Giants used to or the dogs do now or Sydney or Freo did when chocking was in vogue nor do we want to be Crowbots - yes we need to change with the game but no one wins by just following the current vogue fad and dancing merely to the tune played by the opposition.

There is never just one option and rarely just two and in our game no 'one right way' to play it.

IMHO that is

A lot of media / supporters have gone off very early this year. Premierships are not won in April lol.

I love Sydney & they look great, but they are a young team & the back end of the year will be tough the same way it is for all young teams.

You know what every opposition strategy coach was doing Saturday night? Watching the Swans Richmond game on repeat. Not only for ways to dismantle Richmond, but looking at how they will combat Sydney when they play them.

There will be quite a bit of toing and froing this season before any equilibrium is found.

I think if Sydney makes the finals by any chance though, they will be like us in the 2019 finals, in which they would be knocked out straight away by more experienced opposition such as the Power, Tigers, Cats, Bulldogs, Eagles & us in some regards for example. Still very promising by the Swans though to be equal top so far and to knock over us and the premiership favourites already in the season tbf. Big masterstroke by the club to employ Don Pike as a senior assistant at the club as well, given he has transformed their game-style massively from their defence oriented in 2019/2020 to a much attackive game plan this year alone.

One thing that never changes in footy is people going the early crow and jumping to conclusions.

Good footballers who have a football brain and know how to get the footy and offload it well enough will always be like gold.

So we're what 3 games in and that's going to change is it.

Lyons can actually kick goals so not sure what he is on about.
I do worry the new rules opened things up more where we are a lock down then go team.
We go fast and slow. Where swans are all go.. Working for now to coaches put something in to stop it.

I wonder about Rowell. Superb player but two major injuries in what? Maybe ten games? Will be a Justin Clarke level tragedy if his body isn’t up to Afl physically.

Most times it's just bad luck. You look at someone like Adams who trains meticulously ,watches his diet ,built like a brick SH and has had one dose of bad luck after another.

The counterpoint with Rowell is that he was putting his body on the line at an age where the very high majority of players don't have to do that . And copping physical pressure his body would've been totally unaccustomed to. He looks physically ready but maybe it was all a bit much, on top of some bad luck.
