Footscray VFL 2021

Watched the whole game. How West hasn't got a gig before McNeil and Scott especially is absolutely beyond me.

Think Cavarra played well today and pissed off he was made the scape goat again 🐐
This must be extremely frustrating for these players. This type of selection process will cause resentment and potentially divisions within the playing group. Josh Dunkley was a good honest toiler in his first year and won a flag, West is in his third year, killing it in the VFL and two ‘hacks’ comparatively are keeping him out because the rest of the team is so good. I think we must keep filtering these players through the AFL because we need to know best 22 and when injury does come we need players ready with recent experience to slot right in.

I'd say West gets a gig next week.

Garcia, Weightman and West were all very impressive. I could see all of them breaking through and having a real impact as a pressure small forward. I would put Cavarra fourth in line after watching that.

Garcia is an inside animal with power and speed. Weightman has plenty of burst and was finding plenty of it in the second half. West is AFL standard as a mid or pressure forward.

If you add McNeil to the three above our small forward options are perfectly fine.

I also think Schache was much more contested than in the past. Took some really competitive marks in the air and showed some scrap at ground level too. Loved it.

Buku is ahead of Young. Different type of defender but would be way more effective in our system. Is always in the right spot and knows when to mark and when to spoil. Aside from a soft broken tackle in the first was very good.

Young looked miles off it.

I think west, Garcia and weightman are all AFL level players, but I don’t think they’re the small forwards that we need Scotty.

Yes, I would play them all ahead of McNeill, but none of them are specialist, crumbing, goal-kicking smalls. I still think that’s a real area of need.

In time, I’d like to see our forward line:

HF: vandermeer English weightman
FF: JUH Bruce (small forward)

JUH as the 3rd tall. Weightman in the old Wallis role. Vandermeer and a genuine small to add speed, d pressure and crumbing.

I only saw a few brief moments of the game but was Weightman given a run on the ball? The few bits I saw he almost looked to be playing a rover and looked like some set plays off Sweets taps. Or maybe it was just coincidence on the brief moments I saw?
He was definitely playing up the field. Probably to fast track his tank, it was pretty shocking last year.

Agreed. They could do a job like the rolling Richmond small forward line, but no natural crumbing small, like you say.

Do we trade for one or keep trying at the draft?

West and Garcia will be great depth if one of our inside mids needs a spell.

Still cannot grasp how, Lipi, West, Garcia, Weightman or even Hayes wouldn’t be an upgrade on Scott.

Side note
It was great seeing Hogan up and about tonight
Really hope he gets his afl career back on track

He’d be a hard teammate to have or player to coach. Quite a few times a kick wasn’t on target to him and he let his teammates know with poor body language, he’d drop his head and look a bit disinterested. I think the commentators mentioned it at some point that he lets that stuff get to him and impacts his game too much

Agreed. Perplexing to say the least..

Lipinski and West would make best 22 in at least 15 or 16 teams. McNeil and Scott would lucky to make best 22 in 2 teams if that. Bevo selection make no sense.

West has never been given a 6 game run like Scott and that is just criminal. Garcia looks very good but his disposal by foot worries me a little. He is young and has played next to no footy for 2 years so I think this should improve. Prefer him to both Mcneil and Scott already. Khamis also is due and looks very good. I know he is not overly tall but could be the best option between Young, Gardner and Cordy. Love to see him given a chance or maybe a Ryan Gardner run of games but doubt that. I really think Bevo wants Gards back so will not give any of the others a decent chance to cement their place, even though all 3 are just as good if not better.

Did we trade Naughton?

It makes me wonder what is going on at training, in following on-field instructions and in off-field preparation that we don't know about. There must be factors that influence the selections because on apparent form and ability some team selections are baffling.

Hard to argue dropping Gardner though, he's performed better than the other 3 this season and late last year. He was very fortunate to keep his spot after his first few games but I don't see how anyone could watch Lewis Young last night and think he deserves a spot over Gardner right now

I've been harsh on Weightman but he does seem to 'make his own' energy when he's around the ball, it's a really good trait for a kid. He's never out of a contest and I was impressed that he managed to get a kick away form a contested situation. If he can keep developing that side of his game he'll get senior opportunities.

West is just taking the piss at VFL level and I'd have him in ahead of Scott. I think West is now ahead of Wally too sadly.

When he's out of the game, he's out of the game badly. Lewie Young may forever frustrate us, like a brunette Cam Wight who was just so close to being an AFL footballer in his entire time on our list.

Lewy's best is pretty good as he showed two weeks ago and many on here were praising him and saying he should be given more of a go. Let's hope he and the club can get the best out of him/self rather than writing him off [not you Mofra]. Sure he didn't go well yesterday but looks like a confidence issue as others have suggested. Reminds me of Timmy last year when he was criticised and is doing way better now.

Observations

Marra will be good but still a fair way off before he debuts.
Wallis could play inside mid if Libba gets injured.
West and Lipi much better than Scott and McNeill.
Hannan a good depth player.
Garcia, Butler, Weightman, Kharmis and Sweet could all make it.
Lewis Young and Josh Schache are an enigma's when they are on the look good but when they off they look very poor.

Like 2016 dual premiers Western Bulldogs and Footscray.

It’s a valid point. We need to remember Lewis is 16 months younger than Tim.

They aren’t all instant composed senior players like Naughton was.

Fronk 😂 cmon give up on this Naughty back dream you have, it’s never happening, nor should it

Was Schache waaaaaay more physical and competitive than usual? He was genuinely smashing packs at times in the front half. Really pleased with that and just further adds to our depth charts.
I hope he’s happy enough at the club to stay as depth until Bruce retires, or better yet he overtakes Bruce. Post Bruce I honestly have Timmy, Naughty, JUH and Schache in my forward line. It works. Timmy deep, JUH unstoppable as the lead out FF. Naughty roaming between the arch’s, and Schache lead up high forward with elite skills. Don’t care if we can’t lock the ball in the forward line, what good does that do us? Let them walk it out we’ll win it back and hit up one of those 4 on the rebound
