Unfortunately for us the players I'd most expect to want to work as an assistant to Lyon have been swooped up by Foxsports.
You're talking about coaches with no experience moving straight from the playing list?

Don't you think the new assistants we need should be experienced? Other clubs like, Carlton with Teague, Richmond, St Kilda and Collingwood to name a few have all recruited experienced assistants.

Montagna has been great and he's been able to combine his commentating with being opposition analyst which is perfect for us and him, however it's experienced assistants that know drills and forward systems we need to be looking at, IMO.

On field leaders with experience of how Lyon expects things will help

It depends which way we are leaning.

If we are leaning towards not retaining Lyon or it is 50/50, it may be better to bring in some players with fresh ideas. Signing 2 coaches who played under Lyon, and follow the same coaching practices and tactics would not achieve much.

I think having one of the best full field key forwards coaching our forwards would be beneficial
Jordan Lewis? Jarryd Roughead? Mundy would be fulfilling the same role wouldn't he?

Contracting a player for 4 years at the end of their career has worked with Hodge at Brisbane and kinda worked with Sam Mitchell. The danger especially after giving Conca and Coyla three year contracts is they become major list cloggers.

It would seem we have target(s) in mind and are waiting for the regular season to end, or, we are waiting to see if one of our targets gets a gig at North/Carlton.
I would agree with Teague if someone else gets the Carlton job (or Ratten with StK). However if Ross and Rosich are still there with Hale and Rock locked in and shields for them, I would doubt the co-operation or effectiveness of any assistant with new ideas or directions that come into the club next year.

I was talking about Nick Reiwoldt as our forward coach.

Expect 2-3 changes according to Jake Niall
The Dockers have already told development coach Brent Guerra that he will not be given a contract for 2020, while five others – assistants Simon Eastaugh and Michael Prior, development coaches Roger Hayden and Adam Read and the coach of the club’s WAFL affiliate Peel Thunder, Cam Shepherd – have not yet been told whether they will be offered a position.

So with Hale already having a contract did we re-contract Anthony Rock and Mark Webb already?

I hesitate with someone who's not coming from an assistant position with the accompany drills, skills and structures. Although he's a champion and would be a great specialist goal kicking coach coach I'd question if we could can't rely on him for contributing to a positive game plan or changing forward structures from bomb it long?

My primary goal would be to have him pushing Brennan Cox and Hugh Dixon. Particularly the Tasmanian. Really pin him to the hip and show him what hard work is.

He played over 100 games under Ross Lyon, he knows what is expected and can adapt to new methods but like I said, he is an example of elite preparation and recovery. Nick had to work his knee so much, constantly having it drained and still putting in elite running on the weekend.

Roughead - Yes please, he understands structure and leading patterns. He'd teach our forwards to spread and actually block for each other.
Riewoldt - I mean yes, but preferably Roughy. Roo worked under Lyon and the whole 'bomb it long' is shithouse

I would have thought we would be wanting some different voices and ideas rather than just get in ex-Ross players to regurgitate the same message. But I guess if you have your heart set on 5+ more years of Ross getting in some yes-men to reiterate the same message is the right move.

If players on an AFL list need a nanny to motivate them they can GAGF.

Sorry but all Reiwoldt will be is a meat shield for Ross and a cushy number for himself.

Welcome to the reality of young men not maturing as fast as would be ideal.

He would be a development coach primarily. His career is in the living memory of these young players.

Bomb it long is the barebones of Richmond and West Coasts game plans, West Coast openly don’t care about quality of delivery i50 just aim to get as many as possible in, Richmond go for space and make a contest

lol what? Have you ever watched an Eagles game over the past 2-3 seasons?

The Eagles must have the worst coach in the comp given they rank 15th for inside 50s and their whole game plan is just get it in as many times as possible.

That’s why they struggled for half the season, they were only getting their big inside 50 numbers for a quarter or so per game and riding off that for the rest of the match

It’s been mentioned a few times post game by Simpson and Xavier Ellis talked about it a fair bit too

“They want it going like a McDonald’s drive through just get it in over and over regardless of quality keep pumping it in”

I'm not sure about the 'heart set on' it statement but no one here offers up anyone to take our Head Coaching position (gut the assistants) and make us finals contenders (oh wait we are that right now) next year. Easy to drink the water in a desert but harder to find it again..

But it just isn't true, you can tell by simply watching their games that they value skills over just repeat entries with no thought.

I'd guess their contested marking players are above average.

Just to bring that home, by 2019 averages, Fremantle has the #1 and #8 contested marks per game players in the league. Both injured. Tabs and Lobb.
