International Footy is still alive notwithstanding Covid19 and other stuff. This video is a bilingual look at the AFL Japan Grand Final.

Footy in India - nothing has been posted so far on the Twitter feeds that usually cover the game over there. However neighbours - Pakistan fronted up at the Asian Champs just completed without a major sponsor it seems. The Pakistan AFL selected their squad from several locations so it appears the game is still in existence there. Have to say if Pakistan can get there what about their main opponent of India.

Pakistan is flooding a popular (and official) website with their progress.

Amazing news! So glad to see this kick off in Calcutta at last! It would be great to see a contest where maybe the top 7 districts in NE India for proven aussi rules ball handling talent and a rest of India team go at it in an 8-team representational tournament, each representing their home area, and trying to bring it up the rankings as high as they can ....

And the global question: People! Am I the only person around here who has ever wondered what it would be like if one month of the year in this sport worldwide were devoted only to a new Global Trophy, a tiered ladder system, in which we have one team from each Local Govt Area in Victoria (each containing the best players among those who have slept more nights in this LGA than in any other) and 28 equally carved out region teams for the rest of Australia and one participating team per other country in the world all competing for a place in the global top ten and better?

Off topic but related -Sort off.
Just realised the Aussie Women Cricketers are playing a 3 match series against the Pakistan Women, which means something I suppose. Apparently the Pakistan Women playing our game up there wanted to go to the Asian Champs also but no sponsors.

There is FOOTY news from India. After a considerable absence Footy matches it appears have restarted in Southern India. There is an advertisement under Footy in India on X that a ARFI National Championship will be held this year. No other details given.

Here is an update to the above.
The ARFAI National Champs will be held as below
Baripada Stadium, Baripada, Odisha.
January 20 -21 2024.
It appears that 12 seperate Indian States will be competing.
Odisha is a State located on the Eastern side of India.
Could not see any sponsors nominated.
If the above info as advertised is correct it means a complete re-birth of footy up there after Covid and other problems occurred.
More info says that matches were played in 2023 between major teams.
Some of us had hoped the game would flourish up there and it appears long term that may or may not happen. Summed up =Huge potential.
Check out AFL in India on X.

Some more updates---
The National Champs will run from 19th to 21st January.
It appears that 11 States will send teams and there will be Seniors and Juniors competing which is better again.
Checking back in the records -- The actual footy rebirth occurred in January 2023 when several State set ups held Zonal Champs and confirmed first matches since the Covid outbreak in India.
Have no info on Sponsors involved and whether the change of management at the very top of the AFL will indicate any other changes.
The fact that this competition is happening at all will likely mean the money has been found to run it.
Did notice that India was included in upcoming International Championships advertised on Bigfooty.

Updates----AFL ASIA courtesy of their Facebook site had some recent info.
It says that participation up there is up by 22% in 2023.
Some countries listed as below.
Hong Kong +96%
India +57%
Thailand +49%
China +42%
Malaysia +28%
Indonesia +26%
Apparently the info above about India is revised. Covid struck in about March 2020 and all activity stopped. Then in 2022 Covid precautions introduced which led to the 2023 rebirth. This does indicate some sort of resilience from the powers to be in India and expats elsewhere in Asia.
Indias neighbours - Pakistan it seems may have been active through everything and the game is still operating there.
