Footy is dead

Are they still fingering each others rectums in rugby league!! Now that doesn't sound like a game for real men.

At least the hit each other as hard as they did 20 years ago. If anything, they hit harder now!

Can't say the same for Aussie Rules Football. When players now 'carrel' instead of tackling the man with the footy, you know your game is stuffed.

I'd rather watch players run at each other at a million miles per hour and get absolutely smashed, than see a glorified game of keepings-off.

Blues are playing V richmond, that'd be enough to ignite the passion in anyone. Tigers have some amazing young talent, blues all class.

im going/

But hold back on calling your team all class. 3 spoons in 5 years and the possibiliy of another one on the way isnt class buddy. Carlton will be put back in their place by round 5.

Remember most other team havent got any worse, Cartlon have a lot of catching up to do

For me the worst part is when you can clearly notice players are not sure what to do when approaching a contest. You can tell they are shyte scared of getting reported so they don't fully attack the ball, and the players who are still brave enough to go after it get picked off by squibs who simply sit off the packs waiting to tackle the playmakers.
I remember clearly last night Gherig was coming from the right of screen as Mclean was going for a mark. He actually pulled right out of the contest & let him take the mark uncontested. Now I'm sure some Dees would say he was too scared because it was big bad Brock but to me it clearly showed he wasn't sure how to actually make a legal contest. I noticed in The NAB cup several times 2 players running at the ball from opposite directions only to get there & not know what to do. Can I front on bump, how do i tackle a guy with his head down. I saw players throwing their hands up in the air rather than at the footy for fear of giving away soft frees or getting reported. That is not the spirit of the game! I'm not for a second advocating a return to the snipers of the 70's but our game is meant to be tough, thats what makes it great. This pasteurised, homoginised, made for family TV package they are trying to offer simply doesn't cut it.

If the Whelan bump is illegal, that's the end of our game. People will start to drop off fast.

the umpiring was just shocking last night. Now I keep waiting for the whistle to blow everytime someone touches each other. The contest has gone out of the game. The contest and the physicality was what made the game so great.

Now it's a lame version of how great it was. The 80's and 90's was some of the greatest footy ever...the 70's, 60's fabulous.

Bring back those great days, and stop tinkering with the rules making it a pansy's game.

You can tell the players are frustrated. They are horrified what's happened to the game. This is not the game they were brought up to love.

And last night's crowd was small, and totally disinterested, making no noise. They were numb.

Our great game has become crappy basketball and I can't watch this ****.

rant over.

Totally agree, and have for a couple of seasons.

I watch local footy, which is played the way footy should be. Division One matches are of a high quality, have contests and are tough.

Cannot recommend it highly enough.

AFL games these days are a complete ripoff too... especially when you consider the game resembles basketball more than the game I used to love.

Amen to that OB1.

The other thing that gets on my goat is the way holding-the-ball has been officiated. Players now don't want to go for the ball, because if they do, opponents will sit off the contest waiting for you to jump on the ball. They'll hold the ball in ... giving them the easiest possession they will ever get.

Players that now GO FOR THE BALL are the ones penalised (or reported). No wonder we are seeing what we are seeing.

Yes the umpiring was a total disgrace! There are several things that the AFL should look at!

1. This new rule should GO NOW!

2. The roster. But that's for another thread.

What new ruls

I agree the umpiring was shocking last night (as was both teams skill levels and game plans) but the hands in the back free wasn't imposed once that i am aware of .
BTW i love the rule :thumbsu:

  • Brisbane vs Hawthorn match
  • Saints vs Dees match
  • Kerrs free kick agasint
  • Umpiring overall
  • Soft free kicks
  • Crowds
  • Robert Walls
  • Channel 7's coverage
  • Drugs
  • Foxtel
  • Soft reports
Any more?

After the Cricket World Cup I can't wait for the A-League season to start!

Netball is tougher than AFL

What a joke our once great game has become. Umpires who penalise real courage and the slightest tap on a player leads to a lecture and a free - it is almost laughable.

I watched the Storm v Warriors before the AFL - a real game of men playing .

The game is ruined - Sam Newman is right for once. I feel betrayed.

What has happened to our GREAT game???

I love football. Always have. I have played nearly 150 games from my local club and i am getting simply too frustrated to watch a game of AFL anymore. The amount of soft decisions that are payed are absolutely ludicrous. The new hands in the back rule is ridiculous. Its just not football.

The beauty of AFL football is how free-flowing it can be. It is turing into a basketball game, and a minute rarely goes by with a free kick being payed (if not more). And beleive it or not, i get just as frustrated when free kicks are payed to my team. Its not a bias thing.

If people out there feel the same frustration please speak up!!
Anyone who thinks its changing for the better they are either a mother or has never played the game!

If you don't like it, don't watch it! :D Everybody knows the AFL is catering for the mothers, that is why they are changing the rules of the game each year! If only they can stop changing or making up new rules, would be a good start.

Re: What has happened to our GREAT game???

There is certainly a case to be argued that there are problems with the game today.

But it seems were are getting 15 different threads a day about it, and coincidentally, most of them seem to be from supporters of clubs that have lost.

Perhaps one sticky thread would be appropriate for people to discuss the direction the game is changing.

All others should be deleted/merged.

Its getting tiresome.

Re: What has happened to our GREAT game???

The Carlton v Richmond game is actually being umpired pretty well. Certainly the best i've seen this round. Most of the kicks are there, and they haven't paid as many soft pathetic free kicks that have dogged all the other matches.

Re: What has happened to our GREAT game???

I agree about the umpiring. In short whilst watching WB v GEEL I counted in the space of under 3mins 30seconds no less than 5 umpiring decisions of various natures.

Seriously thats just...
