Just reading an article at afl.com.au which looks certaint to smash any hope of seven winning the TV rights to the AFL

According to Patrick Smith (not my all time favourite journo) The one sticking point with Nine and Foxtell getting the TV rights after next season, was the lack of Free-to-air games as Nine already has a contract to cover Rugby League.

Solution - Foxtell can cover the pay TV games both AFL and NRL, 9 can cover all free-to-air Rugby League games and ask Channel 10 to cover ALL Free-to-air AFL games, YES CHANNEL 10.

This way, Nine and Kerry Packers arch rival in Australia, Seven and Kerry Stokes would be out in the cold and Channel 10 would double its ratings overnight.

The idea sounds plausible, and Ten certainly do know how to cover sporting events, Phillip Island, Bathurst and Melbourne Cup just to name a few of Tens top sporting events,

However, if one knows the dealing of Packer in the past, you have to ask "What's in it for Nine and him?"

If he hands over a reported $500,000,000 ($100,000,000 per year per five year deal) to cover AFL, and then give the free-to-air coverage to Ten, on the surface, that seems pointless, and a waste of money to get over seven.

However, if I know Packer's business dealings, it wouldn't surprise me if he was planning a coup to BUY OUT TEN, hence giving him control of 2 of Australia's 3 commercial networks as well as control of Rugby League, Cricket, AFL, Most National Golf Tournaments, Motor Racing and the Spring Racing Carnival - All he doesn't get are the rights to the NSL, Australian Open Tennis, and The Aus Open and Masters of Golf.

I reckon the AFL would be wise in listening to the idea, but what does everyone else think about most of Australia's sporting coverage being controlled by 1 person

I hope TEN don't get it.Could you imagine Tim Webster calling AFL

"and the ball gets kicked down to the 2 big sticks, with a little stick on either side.Once they get it down there they have to touch it over the line"

At least TEN have people who could become annoying boundary commentators.Barry Sheene and Tim Bailey.

Hehehe JubJub, as soon as I saw this topic, I was thinking the same thing about Tim Webster.........*SHUDDER* Ummmmm my opinion??? I guess ten could do OK with the footy, as long as Quarters does the commentary, ok like for every game lol

Seven, if they are gonna keep the rights need to learn how to SHOW EVERY FREAKIN GAME, EVEN IF IT AIN'T INVOLVING A VICTORIAN SIDE AND EVEN IF IT IS SHOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAMN NIGHT, TOO MUCH FOOTY IS NEVER ENOUGH DAMMIT AND SOME OF US VICS DO SUPPORT NON-VICTORIAN CLUBS. Ok there is my opinion.

gocatsgo,

Interesting point about Channel 9 transferring their FTA commitments to Ch 10. There may well be something in this. I followed the link provided in the 'Rugby League Nevous' thread and read the article. In it, David Moffet is quoted as saying the Rugby League / Ch 9 contract prevents any Rubgy League games from being transferred.

I think the Packer / Murdoch end game with this issue is to use AFL to leverage PTV subscription in Australia, something they have not been able to achieve with Rugby League.

WRT Packer planning a takeover of Ch 10, I think there are laws that would prevent this from occurring. There is no way the government would allow a monopoly of media ownership.

If Ten get some AFL coverage I wonder if they will be get Darren Beewick to be a commentator or Carlton Captain Nathan Buckley?

I've thought more about what Packer/Murdoch hope to achieve.

I still stand by them trying to gain leverage into the PTV market.

I also now think the internet rights are the prize that they are after.

The internet is a whole new form of media that encompasses aspects of the three traditional forms of mass media: newspaper, radio and television. Packer / Murdoch are seeking to gain a foothold at the ground level in internet broadcasting.

There will be a certain degree of convergance between internet broadcasting and PTV as ultimately the infrastructure to deliver both of them is the same - cable or satellite. The 56k modems operating through a phone wire simply will not have the necessary bandwidth required to support initiatives like webTV.

It is however possible, and soon will be standard, to perform your internet operations via your cable facility. This is already possible as those of you with cable modem will gleefully know.

The growth potential of the internet as a means of mass communication and broadcasting is significantly more than that available through the more traditional television mediums.

I hope that channel 7 end up keeping the rights. I hate channel 10 and channel 9 and showing afl on foxtel is not fair to all those people without pay tv. If channel 9 and foxtel got the rights they would never show any games up in Queensland where i live anyway (except maybe bris. lions games) cos it's rugby league territory up here.

"Down to our boundary rider Tim Bailey"

"Thanks Tim, I'll just see if I can get a word from Nathan Buckley as he runs down the wing toward me. He looks happy, he actually gave me a wink before just like Phil Clayton does in the Nutri Grain ironman series which also screens here on Ten......Nathan, how are you travelling, it looks hot out there
CRUNCH!!! UGGGHHHH.....We'll gasp catch up with Nathan puff puff puff a little later....back to you Tim."

This is a most interesting scenario

Just read somne srticles in the Fin Review and other papers this morning, they seem to be saying that the 9 / 10 / Foxtel is as good as 'done' - leaving 7 way, WAY out in the cold.

The Packer plan will work like this :

1) AFL on Free to Air on Channel Nine in the Southern States, covering pretty much what Seven do now, maybe a little more, maybe a little less.

2) AFL on Foxtel nationwide - specialising in coverage of all games, regardless of their 'drawing power'

3) AFL on Free to Air on Channel 10 on Friday night and Saturday night in NSW and Qld.

4) AFL Saturady afternoon Game of the Day live on Channel Nine nationwide.

5) Rugby League on Free to Air on Channel 9 in NSW and Qld.

6) Internet rights will probably be on-sold to Telstra Big Pond or the Vizard / McGuire outfit (whose name escapes me at the moment)

Sounds reasonable eneough - especially as far as I'm concerned as it will mean more footy on free to air in Sydney.

So how come 7 look like they have missed out ?

Simply because during the negotiations the AFL was insisting that 7 screen AFL into Sydney and Brisbane on Friday and Saturady nights. Channel 7 declined because they weren't prepared 'to sacrifice' their ratings just to screen footy.

Well serves you bloody well right Channel Seven - you pack of freakking philistine rugby fans.

Don't want 'to scarifice' your ratings ? - ha ! now here is something you can well and truly suck on now Mr Stokes, just imagine - you now appear to have lost the one thing that keeps your wretched TV network competitive.

SUFFER YOU soft**** RUGBY FAN

now you don't have anything to earn you ratings points - nothing.

Yup ur talking about Sportsview!

And 7 I hate The Morse Crap U Show In Sydney Instead Of Footy.

Stick It Up Ya Arse 7! HAHAHAHAH The Bastards Lost Ha!

Hey Mags - spare a thought for Brissy ppl then, we get Sabrina the Teenage witch and bloody old movies, the likes of the Sound of Music and such instead of Footy! At least Morse is more entertaining than that!

BSA,
Great post! ... serves 7 right!!... and the irony is (IMO), that in Sydney, the footy will soon be destroying any B rate shite they put on Friday nights in the ratings.
I found point number 4 very interesting though. Even in Melbourne? Live? .... hehehe Mr. Elliot should be happy

And in regards to the thread, most of us have joked about Webster, Larkin, and Bailey commentating, but seriously, who is going to do it. I know Quarters will be involved, but other than that? ... how many Channel 7 commentators are going to be enticed over to Nine and/or Ten? ... and will they be enticed this year if they are out of contract, or next year to coincide with the changeover of rights?? Will these commentators be able to switch between 9/10 just for the footy??

A couple of interesting changes are in store. Things like The Footy Show finally being able to show footage... and shows like The Game and Talking Footy receiving the treatment that shows on nine recieved earlier. Should be fun!!
