Just reading an article at afl.com.au which looks certaint to smash any hope of seven winning the TV rights to the AFL
According to Patrick Smith (not my all time favourite journo) The one sticking point with Nine and Foxtell getting the TV rights after next season, was the lack of Free-to-air games as Nine already has a contract to cover Rugby League.
Solution - Foxtell can cover the pay TV games both AFL and NRL, 9 can cover all free-to-air Rugby League games and ask Channel 10 to cover ALL Free-to-air AFL games, YES CHANNEL 10.
This way, Nine and Kerry Packers arch rival in Australia, Seven and Kerry Stokes would be out in the cold and Channel 10 would double its ratings overnight.
The idea sounds plausible, and Ten certainly do know how to cover sporting events, Phillip Island, Bathurst and Melbourne Cup just to name a few of Tens top sporting events,
However, if one knows the dealing of Packer in the past, you have to ask "What's in it for Nine and him?"
If he hands over a reported $500,000,000 ($100,000,000 per year per five year deal) to cover AFL, and then give the free-to-air coverage to Ten, on the surface, that seems pointless, and a waste of money to get over seven.
However, if I know Packer's business dealings, it wouldn't surprise me if he was planning a coup to BUY OUT TEN, hence giving him control of 2 of Australia's 3 commercial networks as well as control of Rugby League, Cricket, AFL, Most National Golf Tournaments, Motor Racing and the Spring Racing Carnival - All he doesn't get are the rights to the NSL, Australian Open Tennis, and The Aus Open and Masters of Golf.
I reckon the AFL would be wise in listening to the idea, but what does everyone else think about most of Australia's sporting coverage being controlled by 1 person
