It's not footy slang but the phrase "leg speed" is really starting to annoy me. Kind of like when you are watching motor sport and they talk of the speed ... I already know they aren't talking about the speed of the windscreen wipers.

Player lining up for goals, opposition spectators say that in the hope that the chewy on the sole of his boot sticks to the turf while having a shot causing him to miss.

I hadn't thought of it like that. I always assumed that the chewy was on the part of the boot that makes contact with the ball so that the timing and direction of the kick is upset.

I've noticed the past couple of seasons a lot that commentators are saying he's on world record pace or that was a world record when talking about a statistic in the AFL. When they say this do they simply mean AFL record .. or AFL/VFL record. I'm 99% sure they aren't comparing stats with leagues around the world in Canada, USA, Europe etc ... and I'm pretty sure they aren't including SANFL, WAFL, TSL or any other league within Australia.

I know it's a small thing but it's just a pet hate of mine, like in the NBA when the Champion is called World Champion.

the pill is a great one
clunking a big grab
splits the middle
opens the floodgates
"IT'S ON FOR YOUNG AND OLD" does that have its origins in footy?

I hate the term melee, it seems, dare I say it, 'un-Australian'. What's wrong with brawl, punch up, donnybrook.. anything but melee!

Language is an amazing thing. Melee translates more to push and shove where brawl or punch up is violent. In a code that is transfixed with image in the past by eliminating violence using melee was an important step.

Donnybrook should be left in the early 80s..sounds terrible.

Oh yes, I know why they used it  Just don't like it, sounds odd to me for our game. How about dust up? ;) (Love donnybrook :p )

Whereas i thought it was meant to put off the player by jokingly trying to get them to look under their boots.

Up the guts!
Yes it's a simple one but 'The Guts' is my favourite.

Back in the day before multiple midfield rotations, I'd love it when in a close game, the coach would get his best, hardest players - often backmen - and 'chuck em in the guts' to try and win the game.

In fact, I think we over complicate footy, and the best game plan is to put all your best players in the guts, when kicking out from full-back, do a long kick up the guts., etc

Mates and I even used to use the phrase in Trivial Pursuit when you went across the middle instead of around the outside.

When there's a throw in near the point post, and Eddie always says "it's as good as a kick from there it centres the ball". Umm unless the rules have changed not sure you can take a mark from a throw in.

Not really slang but just shits me.

I don't get that either - especially in the NBA, where there are other more than capable teams from throughout Europe who would give some NBA champions a run for their money.

"It's a worm burning, finger breaking, up country mongrel of a punt kick...but it's effective"

Please bring "the Quarterback role " back as well as introduce "drinking the Kool-aid" and "that's who they are" into our Footy Slang
