Im going to start footy traing pretty soon, but being a pom I have never played before.

Considering the number of "experts" that post on BF i thought here would be the best place to start, so I dont look like a complete tool when I run out for my fist training session.

I do watch the footy so I know the rules ect ect, but I could do with some hint and tips on kicking, marking ect ect.

Just watch the other guys and see how they hold the ball and mark the ball. It will take a while to get use to if you have never played before but keep at it. It's good fun.

Obviously if the ball is going over your head then take an over head mark and if the ball is lower than your neck then take the mark on the chest/belly.

Go out and kick the footy and run around with someone before training.

I am sure if you go to training and let your new teammates know of your lack of skills, you will find most of them will be prepared to give you a bit of extra help after training.

I'd also say you will become a bit of a cult hero around the club, we had a scottish guy play for us once before while on holiday in WA, when he got a kick or mark the roar was defening, so good luck to you mate.

That's why he is going to training, just do what the coach tells you and follow your team mates examples unless they are ********. Just get a feel for that leather, it is beautiful, it will take you a while to get a feel of ofall the skills, mastering them i mean but just pop that footy on your boot and handball and after kciking a good goal and or a nice kick, your confidence will rise and if you keep practising your skills will improve.

Then you need to have some courage to go in the big packs and endurance and all that.

Armegeddon's right. You need to get a feel for the footy-my advice would be to borrow a football from someone and whenever it's practical dont put it down. handball it to yourself, throw it in the air and catch it, roll it along the ground and try and control it and when no-ones watching kick it against a wall really hard and try and mark the rebound.

Just about every footy training drill is a case of "go to where you give it". Never stand at the start of the line and just follow the guy in front of you. If you have reasonably good hand-eye co ordination you should pick it up fairly quickly.

guide the ball down to your foot when kicking try leave as little as drop of th ball as you can
also who cares just have fun thats what were out there for

I think you'll find the correct way to do it is take the ball out in front. You always take it out in front, always.

Spot on. As soon as yo mention that a) you're not from around this part of the world and b) you've never played, you will obtain instant cult status along with a lot of help from the other fellas who will bust a gut to make sure you get out there for a game. And wait until you kick your first goal during the game, you will be swamped.

There's this new bloke who joined my football team, anyway, he can't kick to save his life.
Even the coach had to pull him aside and teach him how to kick a football...how embarrassing! :D

Top bloke, though. :thumbsu:

Your never going to learn to kick a football properly in full paced footy drills, you need to go by yourself and practice your kicking, practice dropping the ball onto your foot standing and running. theres a ****** at my footy club who cant kick the football to save his life and he never learns because he throws the ball down onto his boot and doesnt want to practice his technique.
Consequently he ruins every drill he is in.
Dont be that ******.

Nothing like boosting a teamates confidence........:thumbsd:

Just enjoy the experience buddy doesn't matter if your the best or the worst player in the team it more about the amount of beer you can drink after the game ...... master that and your there :)

As mentioned before get a footy and carry it around with you all the time.Get so that your hands form the footy shape naturally , flick it , toss it , handball it , kick it in the air as much as you can. Mastering the footy is the important thing in footy and then you will need to learn where to run , etc later on but get that ball handling right.
It will take time but enjoy the journey and don't worry about the destination. Enjoy the experience.

Make your own footy out mandarin peel - name it - introduce it to your friends, family and spiritual advisor - let it drive your car - whisper affirmations to it in the middle of the night - take it down to the park and kick the absolute sh|t out of it.

To me, you should always turn up about 1/2 an hour BEFORE training for a kick to kick. Start with short stuff over 10-15 metres (left and right hand/foot) before even thinking about going longer.

Sucks for you. Had our last training on Thursday night for footy and have the GF on Sunday at 1am. On Sunday everyone please make a thought for Tracy Village Razorbacks in the GF. It would be awsome to win a premiership in the first season i have played footy!!!

If you get within 10 goals of the Bulldogs you will be doing well.

Yeah we ran out of legs in the last quater which was dissapointing because we won the first two finals in the last quater over running the opposition. But hey we are happy because with 4 h&a games to go we needed to win all of them just to make the finals and we ended up making the gf. Sure it was disapointing not winning but i think we did a great job.

Did u go to the game???

yeh seems obvious but good advice, and i would suggest doing this numerous times before you head down. But as long as you go to the right club you will be fine as there are pleanty of hacks out there playing footy still.
