Barkley to room with Jordan before comeback

May 10, 2001
Los Angeles (AP) – Charles Barkley, getting in shape for a possible joint NBA comeback with Michael Jordan, plans to move in with Jordan for a month of serious training before a decision is made.

Barkley said in Thursday’s Los Angeles Times that when his broadcasting duties with TNT end May 24, he’ll live and train with Jordan in Chicago.

Barkley said Jordan came to his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., last week and they played in a scrimmage with Phoenix’s Penny Hardaway.

“Michael looked great,” Barkley told the Times.

Noting that Doug Collins is leaving his job as an NBC commentator to become coach of the Washington Wizards, Barkley said, “If that isn’t an indication that Michael is coming back, I don’t know what is.”

Barkley said he is working out twice a day and has lost 45 pounds since he and Jordan began training for their possible comebacks at the start of the year.

Barkley now weighs 292 pounds and would like to get down to about 265. Jordan has lost 25 pounds.

Looks like the possibility of MJ & Barkley playing again are becoming more likely. Can't wait 'til next season!!

ok well i didnt hear that. MJ doesnt hve any interest in coming back, and if the latest pics were anything to go by, him and barkley would need to lose a lot more if they were to return to the court.

it would however, be great to see him back out there. might have to get onto my sources in chicago to check this out. in a way i hope it is true

dee_girl9, this is from espn.com today. Doug Collins (Jordan's first coach in the NBA) is coach the Wizards next year so it looks to be falling into place nicely for a return. Should be enthralling.

yeah i knew that Doug was coaching, i just dont think mike has the passion to go for a 2nd comeback, but stranger things have happened. i aint folking out money to see him play his last game again  im still paying off the last trip. but you r right it will be enthralling to see what happens

Yeah i read the same article at NBA.com and it seems more likely everyday that a return is in the making. It would be awesome to see him come back as he is my Idol!!

I just dont think the comeback will be with the Wizards, Jordan is smarter than that and wont make a return unless he knows he has a chance at success.

Its just a wait and see deal now, but if he does return i will have to save up and go and see him as i have never seen him live and would be a dream come true. I saw Magic when he came to Perth, he was awesome.

Down by three with 2 secs remaining they have the ball in there half on an inbounds pass, Magic runs baseline then cuts up the sideline recieves the pass and throws up a long running trey. Pure Magic as it settled in the bottom of the net, the place went nuts everyone is bowing in his greatness. They come out for over time and win by like 10 points. Probably the greatest game ive ever seen live!!!

If anyone else in Perth was at that game they will know what im talking about, so ive seen the best in Magic but if there was anything better, its Mike. So i gotta see him play.

I can only imagine dee. Actually being there in the building when he made the shot. What an experience. :) If I may ask, where were you sitting exactly??

ok well try to imagine the scene from the cying seconds of the game, (all you fanatics can) and if you look opposite the benches there were kinda like boxed off areas (kinda like at the powerhouse but better) well we were the first row behind those. pretty good seats. the seats run in line with the three point line at the top of the key

IM SORRY :(

im sorry Jod. please dont hate my guts. :(

The first reaction of the Jazz fans were "WHAT THE F$#% " and then it was grumble grumble grumble. my god they were whinging more than crows supporters. :p

Actually one of the things that was good about it, is that they all admired Michael cos he's such a champion. even tho his brilliance had just cost them a NBA ring. MOST of them were good losers (if there is such a term)

You guys all agree that he should come back? I don't doubt his skill or commitment, hell no, but you gotta think at 38 he's not gonna have the same athleticism or fitness as the good old days. As good as he is i never saw him dunk over a guy like Vince did at the olympics (leapfrogs a 7 footer), so i gotta think modern opposing guards might have caught up to him in that department.
Having said that there's no doubt I want back in the game, the prospect of 'Half-man, half-amazing' vs 'the greatest' has gotta make your mouth water.
Go Raptors for 2001 title!

outkast.. yeah, that was the best dunk i've seen...
saw it in person too! great sh~t !... man...

my fav. dunks all time would be that vince dunk over the frenchman Weiss... and Tom Chambers soaring dunk over mark jackson... (arms 90degrees, above basket..hahah)...

You two must not have seen many dunks in your time. Chambers dunk was nice and Carters was very nice but Wilkins Drexler Pippen Dr J Skywalker Webb and of course Jordan have done many a dunk better.

And the Carter v Jordan wouldnt be the matchup i want to see. It would Jordan v Bryant or Jordan v Iverson. Those would be good battles. I hope he does come, obviously he wont be as athletic as he was and he wont be dunking on ppl like he used to but he would still be the best post up player in the game and he would find other ways to beat you.

i've left one out...

Dr J dunk on michael cooper...

Dr J on the break.... draws the ball up to his chest (from right side to left) and swings it back to the right for a one handed windmill....

got to see him in person as well at hoopfest, but was well and truly retired by then

hmmm... depends... dunks in games, or uncontested dunks in slamdunk contests...

for dunks in games...
i've listed my ones... Dr j windmill on m.cooper, tom chambers soar over m.jackson, and vinsanity over weiss...

for dunks in slamdunk contests....
terence stansbury soaring dunk over a chair (nba later banned props)..
countless jordan dunks (esp flying in from the baseline - eye level with the hoop, another where he kinda moves/wraps his arm under and over the basket with a right hand dunk - back facing basket...
spud webb... damn.. i'm a fraction taller than him, and he stuff with two hands... frick...

When it comes to any kind of dunks then Micheal is your man. His fly from the free throw line or his stare down into the basket from the baseline, his back to the basket reverse double pump. He's just awesome. Then theres Wilkins classic Windmill, nobody does the windmill like Wilkins. And Spud well he isnt the best technical dunker but as for awe factor!!! The way he leaps and does a 360 and stuffs it...only 5'7, quite unbelieveable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure MJ threw an awsome leaner over Mark Eaton when he was playing for Utah back in 91/92.

He was 7'2 and ended up using Jordan's sandshoes as a sandwich!

shermanator...

yeah... mark eaton was 7'4..
taller players like shawn bradley (7'6), manute bol (7'6) and Gheorghe Muresan (7'7) have been dunked on...

so yeah, taller players have been dunked over..

the thing that was special about the V.Carter dunk over the 7ft frenchman was that he 'leapfrogged' him... ie. legs/crotch flew over the head of the frenchie...
ok, maybe frenchie was a little bent, so not quiet 7foot when vince 'leapfrogged him' but, still would be close...

i've got the avi of the dunk.. so if anyone interested, i can mail to yas....

so yeah, dunking 'on', or dunking 'over' someone is different from the 'leapfrog' over kinda dunk...

Coxon, as much as the Carter dunk was good, Jordan has done many dunks better. From explosions of athletism to artwork, Micheal can do it all.
