Jack Billings.
Been a whipping boy especially on this forum, ever since Gilbert retired.
They always talk about how soft he is.
They came with the pitchforks last week after a quiet outing

Any apologies for the boy now we find out he played injured?

I have never understood the criticism of Billings other than his kicking for goal. It seems a lot of posters want him to be the kind of player he simply isn't built to be. He is a highly skilled, quick thinking, slightly built player without exceptional speed. He can mark extremely well over his head, can read the play beautifully and controls the ball brilliantly. He is not made to be a crash and bash player, but is exceptionally important to our team success.

The comparison between Billings and the Bont is valid but pointless. We selected Jack, he is our player, he has stayed with us despite tempting offers from elsewhere, so he is a Saint. He is as tough as can be expected considering his size and shape and the fact he is constantly hit by defenders much bigger than he is. He wins the ball in many difficult positions and finds a way to deliver it forward. Look at him for the player he is, not as a miracle player who can solve our problems. He would walk into any other team and the better the team the better he would play.

Probably should have sat out the game in hindsight but that was tough.

Comparison to Bont is irrelevant.
Billings was clearly the 3rd best prospect in that draft. And any club, inc. the dogs would have taken him before the Bont.

If we are going to play “back to the future” and pretend we knew how good Bont would turn out its still irrelevant because he would have gone #1 instead of Boyd.

Because Marshall goes fwd more with relief from Ryder.

Less pressure on battle.
Contested marking and bringing ball to ground now brings the small fwds into the game.
Our entire attack is improved.

Carlisle is now free to return to the backline.
Our defence is improved.

The same goes with geary and Webster coming in, frees up coff and Clark to do what they do best.

No doubt confidence is low.
But a couple of leaders back and a chance for everyone to play there preferred position, along with some flexibility for ratts, could turn around in no time.

And still lacking pace out of congestion.
Jones was good for a quarter, not sure what happened to him after that.
Maybe Byrnes can be the answer there?

Nothings changed.

Still got a good crop of young players.
Still need to keep building on it.
Still a few years away from consistently challenging the best sides.

Marshall and Jones going back out Makes finals very unlikely now this year.

Desperate for tall players.
Ryder, Marshall, Howard, King then nothing.

Got good inside mids but with gresh and Jones out really exposed for breakaway speed against the dogs, they annihilated us with their spread and closing speed in between the arcs.

Disappointing yes, surprising not really.

No need to over react.
Still on course for improvement with the young core.
No need to throw out the baby with the bathwater.
We have a good batch of kids.
They need time to develop together.
We need more depth.
We are at where Melbourne was a few years ago. Or Richmond 10 years ago. Both those sides had the same core stars back then but when you build around them and they build chemistry from playing together that’s when it turns around.
