Forget The Skills, Forget The Injuries - When Do We Start Questioning The Culture?

So 2/3 weeks now we've just rolled over to an opposition side applying a modicum of pressure. I thought the Saints game was the pinnacle of club embarrassment, but this Geelong game takes it to new depths.

Yes we have injuries, and yes we have blokes like Ainsworth pulling on the jumper, but when does the administration call Simmo into head office and start asking questions about team ethos and effort?

Shuey sits on the pine and suddenly the side is bereft of all leadership. No one is willing to stand up and say "follow me, boys! Time to dig in!" When the rot starts the coaching group is unable to address is, and the players are unwilling to try. Everyone is content to let an opposition side wrest momentum from the game and run away with it.

Opinion: we've taken the "family club" moniker too far - its great that we dont have any major incidents in the papers anymore but from top to bottom there isnt a single red-blooded competitor who bleeds for the colours in the entire coaching/ playing structure (barring Shuey and Yeo). That is absolutely unacceptable in a sporting league and its contributing to what we are seeing onfield today.

Forget injuries and forget skill. We need to go right back to absolute basics and start emphasising intent and desire for the game. At some point since our last premiership we have started to accept that rolling over and showing the belly is ok when it all gets a bit too much, and as a supporter that disgusts me more than anything else we are doing. Its time we started moving on the guys both on and off the field who could give less than two sh*ts about performance, and replace them with people who relish competition.

Heard someone ring up 6pr the other night and say the greatest thing that could happen to the Eagles is For Fremantle to become the big boy in Perth.
We are to comfortable making money than doing what we are there for which is football.
We have been the big fish in a small pond fir way to long.

Respectfully, totally disagree. Having "red-blooded competitors" is not exclusive to being a family oriented club.
Family is naturally important, it does not need to be sold or even mentioned. Winning and attitude is all that matters at football clubs.

Again, strongly disagree. Winning with disregard for culture isn't winning at all.
See situations like the Pies keeping De Goey over Treloar, or Essendon doping. Winning is not all that matters.

Didnt say it was. Family should be important regardless of what brand of footy you play. But we have an attitude problem, and from the outside looking in it looks like no one at any point in the chain is interested in the desire to win, and are more interested in maintaining a certain image.

Skills are alright. They're rarely what is called into question. Injuries speak for themselves at the moment, but nonetheless you'd think only the truly lowest of the low clubs would roll over like we did today.

The disappointing thing is that we've seen them do it all. Seen them beat great contested teams like Port in the contested footy. Seen them lift in finals to dominate this 'ground ball' stat Fox Footy jizz over. Seen them dominate games with a smothering game style at its best.

The gap between our best and our worst is staggering, and I don't understand how we can see both in the same game at times.

A whole swathe of players just confirmed that when things get tough, they go missing. The whole AFL now knows it and anytime they can string together 2-3 goals, their confidence will skyrocket.

Vardy, Waterman, Cole, Ainsworth Langdon & Nelson confirmed that they are simply not up to it. At times, the game looked completely foreign to them.

Worst game I have seen Duggan, Rotham, Cripps, Sheppard and Naitanui play in a long time.

O'Neill, Brander and Jones seemed to try, without much success.

Gaff and Kelly both looked so slow. Particularly in their defensive running.

If it wasn't for Barrass, Sheed, Witherden, Redden and Darling we could have lost by 200.

Allen and McGovern both excused.

It really looked like the style we were playing in QLD last year. Did they get spooked by the COVID scare?

And to think, we haven't even played Richmond yet.

Why is Allen excused?

People can absolutely criticize effort, skills, intent... but I think it's laughable to suggest that we've "taken the "family club" moniker too far". Totally unrelated to our performance today.

I think it's our midfield setups and coaching as much as anything.
Midfield set ups and coaching can’t help when your players just stand by while the opposition run away with the footy.

Our issue is hunger, desire, heart. Whatever you want to call it, we have lacked it for the most part since 2019. We turn up when we feel like it and that’s it.
