World Cup winning All Black and respected rugby commentator John Drake has died suddenly at his home in Mt Maunganui at the age of 49.

Drake, a tighthead prop, played eight tests including the inaugural 1987 World Cup final against France at Eden Park which New Zealand won 29-9 to claim their only title.
