This might indicate Gilespie's family, Gillespie with two 'l's' would prefer him to be quiet.

During Question Time in Parliament today, Foreign Minister Marise Payne was asked why the Australian public only learned about Mr Gilespie's case after he had been sentenced to death.
But she said appropriate assistance had been provided to Mr Gilespie since his arrest.
"Every consular case with which the Government deals is different, and every consular case is handled in consultation with [diplomatic] posts, family and legal representatives in the most appropriate way," she said.

The lesson from this is one of expectations management for the general public.

In future, one consideration for the (non - family) friends and acquaintances of any missing Australian persons,
is that they might possibly have been arrested overseas and be and continue to be in an overseas jail for years.

I assume that at least one of his friends/acquaintances contacted either DFAT, Crimestoppers or their State or Federal Police to report their friend as a missing person?

I guess that the official response to any such report(s), would have been something like, that DFAT or police had confirmation that he was not a missing person.

Yes, thanks that might be her. I thought it was more recently but it might have been as far back in 2014.

It’s funny you say that - I always think KD was more recent than she was. I think it’s because it sticks in my mind because she was given very special VIP treatment from the Australian government.

There was a real - er - epidemic of people being arrested on drugs charges in Guangzhou for a couple of years when it became a trafficking hub. From memory there is at least one other Australian on death row now; I think he got a suspended death sentence.
