James Sutherland, one of Australia’s foremost sporting administrators of the past 20 years, has joined the Geelong Football Club board as an appointed director.

Sutherland, a life-long Cats supporter and 20-year member, spent 17 years as CEO of Cricket Australia, leading the sport through a period of sustained growth and success.

During his time as CEO, Cricket Australia's revenue grew from $50 million to near $500 million in 2018. Over the same period, increases in attendances (up 137%), participation (up 250%), and sponsorship (up by over 500%) were also achieved.

Wow

Seems we have been busy ahead of the off-season and had a few appointments lined up - new assistant coach and now new board member

So the club hasn't just been sitting around patting themselves in the back because of "another successful season", but they have been actively looking at making changes and bringing in new people with fresh ideas

Let's see if there's other changes or announcements over coming weeks

No, it's far worse than that. The club has been actively taking its eye off the ball and spending all its time finding the next sycophants to the club's doomed cause rather than aggressively pursuing success on the field. Moves like this only confirm the cynic's worst suspicions of how monumentally out of touch the club really is.

You know it makes sense...

So is he going to put every Geelong game behind the foxtel paywall like he did with ODI cricket?

Don't like this guy at all, he is the modern day CEO type, sell out the future for short term gains.

“Carlton secretly paid star player Greg Williams $200,000 by funnelling money through a construction company to beat the AFL salary cap, according to a report yesterday.

The payments, made between 1993 and 1995, were authorised by Carlton chiefs Ian Collins and James Sutherland as ground maintenance, although no work was done, Melbourne's Herald Sun reported yesterday.

The company used to conceal the payments was Amigo Constructions Pty Ltd, which had Victoria's Sports Minister, Justin Madden, on board as a director until July 1994.

Documents relating to the scheme outline the arrangement was the brainchild of Collins and Williams's manager, Peter Jess, who was also a director of Amigo Constructions.”

Not happy with this appointment. Complicit in carlton’s cheating. Oversaw Australia cheating in South Africa... This toxic flog will probably succeed Brian Cook too no doubt

I have no background to his involvement with the payment fiasco at Carlton so won't make comment on that.

But I don't see any objective basis for suggesting Sutherland had any effect on (much less oversight of) our cricket team's shameful effort in Cape Town last year. To think that the CEO would have endorsed or encouraged their actions in any way seems nonsensical to me, given the cost to the game's reputation that has been incurred since.

Whatever his public pronouncements on the matter, I would expect that Sutherland was absolutely enraged by players so monumentally trashing the brand that he was charged to promote.

At Cricket Australia he also either oversaw or turned a blind eye to a toxic culture at both Board level and in the actual Head Office.
Not to mention the gutless way he either approved or at the very least went along with the neanderthal Industrial Relations approach of the Chairman and his headkicker during the Lockout.

Would this be the same Cricket Australia culture that saw us win 3 consecutive Cricket World Cups - 1999, 2003 & 2007, and where we won the 03 & 07 tournaments (during his tenure as CA CEO), without losing a match?

Maybe he can bring some of that culture with him

Nope.

That was all rolling and in place before JS got there.

Champion Team of superstars cover lots of cracks for the first few years as things kind of ran down.
