I can't see a Red Bull/Ferrari tie up working very well. I can't think of a competitive Ferrari powered car that wasn't a Ferrari (apart from the Vettel driven Toro Rosso in 2008) and Ferrari have a history of duplicity when it comes to the other teams they have supplied engines to.

Marchionne set for Red Bull engine talks
Ferrari wants to re-enter the running to be Red Bull's new engine supplier from 2016.
Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport claims president Sergio Marchionne intends to visit the Monza paddock this weekend not only to support Ferrari, but to try to convince Red Bull to sign up for a supply of the Maranello-made 'power unit'.
The news follows reports of a potential deal between Red Bull and Mercedes being delayed due to Toto Wolff not wanting to interfere with the existing contractual agreement between Red Bull and Renault.
"Renault and Daimler have a very friendly industrial relationship," Wolff confirmed, "so we have said that while Red Bull and Renault have not resolved how to proceed, we will not even start a conversation.
"The situation is extremely complex with many decisions that must be taken. That must all be sorted out first," the Mercedes chief added.
Amid the delay, Gazzetta claims Marchionne wants to re-enter the fray, perhaps with a new offer where Red Bull would enjoy the latest specification of Ferrari's power unit rather than an earlier-touted 'B' version.
An additional benefit of a Ferrari tie-up for Red Bull would be that Toro Rosso, the energy drink company's other F1 team, could also use Italian power.
La Gazzetta also said Marchionne intends to sound out the latest stars of F1, including Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz, with a view to potentially replacing Kimi Raikkonen beyond 2016.
Fascinatingly, a Red Bull-Ferrari tie-up would mean that all three aforementioned drivers would be powered by Ferrari next year.

Mercedes board rejects proposal to supply Red Bull with F1 engines

The Mercedes board has decided not to supply Formula 1 engines to Red Bull in the future, AUTOSPORT understands.

The news comes the day after it emerged Red Bull will not use Renault power next year, despite having a contract in place with the French manufacturer through to the end of 2016.

Red Bull is understood to have issued a document requesting a termination of its agreement that will be accepted by Renault.

Given the severe breakdown in the relationship between Red Bull and Renault, given the unreliability of the French manufacturer's power unit, the former approached Mercedes enquiring about a supply.

And less young drivers being developed through the Red Bull Academy too.

Scott speed? Lol

Alguersuari & buemi? plodders

Jev? They developed him into a journeyman.

Sainz? As if he was developed by rb. They gave him free run , cos of his dad.

Verstappen ? They dismissed everyone in their program to give I've him a run!

Klein? Lol

kvyat? Unremarkable

Riccardo? His family has so much money. He'd have made his way up the ranks anyway.


Now compare that to how many drivers they've led up the garden path and burned their careers?

As opposed to all the other academys around that give drivers without money a real shot of making it to F1?

We bemoan pay drivers. What Red Bull are doing has to be admired.
 
Kinda disappointed Mercedes won't supply Red Bull. Can certainly understand the reasons but still disappointed. Ferrari could reignite Red Bull into a fighting force though.

Part of an article on Autosport about the situation:

To rub further salt into this this extremely perturbing state of affairs, consider that the World Endurance Championship has just five different teams contesting the top (LMP1) class - yet each has its own bespoke engine.

Whatever, matters have now reached a critical point - and F1's powers-that-be really should wake up and reflect on the root cause of the situation, and not simply (and conveniently) point to global economics.

There is something intrinsically wrong with the highest level of motorsport when it cannot attract more than two (works) operations willing to supply customer engines to a globally broadcast championship.

After all, if the VW Group can develop two different engines (Porsche 2.0 V4 petrol turbo hybrid/Audi V6 turbo diesel hybrid) - each at greater cost than an F1 project - in addition to Nissan producing its own power unit for Le Mans and Toyota being due to announce a new design for a single championship consisting just eight rounds, there cannot be too much wrong with the economic situation, can there?

Why do you think Mclaren are so uncompetitive this season ? Im asking out of general interest considering where they were a few seasons ago to how far back they are from a majority of the field. I mean to be one season racing ferrari,Redbull and Williams as the next best behind Mercedes, to this season struggling to beat the Marussia's I mean its a massive contrast between seasons.

Gee. Lucky we weren't around in the 60s. And if we were, there's was no internet at the time. F1 for the next few years - Hamilton winning titles, and fans whinging about engines.

Nobody without their own source of funding, or network on contacts gets through. There's no rags to riches stories with RB.

In general, back in the 60's you became a formula 1 driver based on your raw talent, not how much money you could bring to the team..... thats what I believe the reason for mentioning it is.

But even so, a high percentage of drivers were selected by this criteria right up until the late 1980's. I think Pedro Diniz was the first F1 driver to come into a team because of money where the amount of money far outweighed his talent,though in saying that he wasnt by far the worst driver ever in F1.
