Forster-Knight's point to prove
Rob Forster-Knight admits he has ‘a burning desire’ to prove himself as an AFL player with Port Adelaide.
“I didn’t show my full potential at Essendon,” he said after the Power’s time-trial run in the North Adelaide parklands on Wednesday.
“It was partly my own fault because I didn’t grab my opportunities with both hands, but there were also limited opportunities. So I’ll work hard at Port and hopefully they’ll come.
“It’s not going to be easy to get a spot. They’ve been a great side the last few years. If I can win the respect of the players and the Port supporters, hopefully I’ll have a fair crack at it.
“I’m looking forward to it. I just got here Sunday night. I’ve met all the boys. I’m just trying to put my best foot forward at the moment.”
Strong and athletic, Forster-Knight, 21, played 31 AFL matches for Essendon over the past three seasons (including only four this year).
He was the first AFL-experienced player taken in the recent National AFL Draft – with Port’s fourth pick (No. 39 overall).
“You never know what’s going to happen on draft day,” he said. “I had my fingers crossed. I spoke to a few clubs and they indicated a little bit of interest, so it was up in the air, but I was very glad when Port read my name out.
“I find the transition quite easy so far. I’m originally from the country (Cobram) so it’s a bit slower pace around here, which is good.”
Asked where he saw his role with the Power, Forster-Knight said: “I spoke to Mark Williams before the draft and he indicated there was a role in the backline for me if I was willing to work hard, so that’s what I’ll be aiming to do – fill a role in the backline.
“I’ve always had enormous respect for Port Adelaide. They’re obviously one of the most professional clubs out there. And just stepping into the club yesterday and seeing the facilities, they’re first-rate, so it gives you the best opportunity to have a successful year.
“Port are still on the way up. They haven’t peaked yet. You can see it in all the players’ eyes that they’ve got some unfinished business. I’m really looking forward to jumping on board and seeing where it goes. I think we’re set for a really good year.”
Forster-Knight is excited about the chance to again play with former Bomber team-mate Damien Hardwick, now a pillar in Port’s defence.
“I played a couple of years with ‘Dimma’ and he was a bit of a role model for me at Essendon,” he said. “I like the way he plays his footy. He’s hard at it and I try to model myself on the way he plays.”
