Mod. Notice Forum Software Upgrade - 6am January 1st

Remove this Banner Ad

Some time between December 27th and January 1st there will be a major site upgrade.

BigFooty will continue to operate during the upgrade.

BUT there will be a period of a day or two where nothing posted or uploaded will be carried over to the upgraded site.

We will put up a large warning on the site, post to Twitter, Facebook, and send out an email to all users.

You can see Xenforo version 2 working on BigCricket (with the default theme):

The Boring Stuff

Why?
Xenforo version 1.5 - our current version - is reaching its end of life in May 2019.

Xenforo version 2.0 - the version we are moving to - has been out for over 12 months and is likely pretty solid.

Xenforo version 2.1 will come out in 2019 and be another large-ish jump for the forum software. We will likely move to that around Christmas/New Years next year (2019), or sooner if it looks like a small job with minimal downtime and the software looks solid.

How?
The plan is to:

1. Clone BigFooty entirely. Web site, database, uploads and proxied images.

2. Leave the original site running.

3. Update the cloned site. (A danger point with 50 mil posts - might need a couple of goes.)

4. Swap over to the clone as our public site. Content posted after the site was cloned (1. above) will be lost.

5. Drop the original site.

This means probably a day or two of posts and uploads will be lost forever. Be mindful of this when posting. There will be a warning on the site BUT this might not be obvious on Tapatalk so please check your emails.

NOTE: If the cloning fails we may need to start from 1. again. So the posts you thought would not survive may survive and... yeah it can get messy with these big upgrades.

We will try to keep tipping working but it may require some manual intervention.

Refugees
We will make a board available on BigCricket - http://www.bigcricket.com/community/ - for BigFooty refugees to keep in touch should there be any extended outage. Register over there if you need to.

Some functionality will change.
Some of the third party add-ons we use may not be available in version 2 and we will need to find alternatives. Some functionality has been absorbed into the core of Xenforo 2 so we won't need updated addons in some cases.

Medals and Tipping have version 2.0 versions so they will not change much.

Media embeds (YouTube, Google Spreadsheets) will likely not change, and might improve with new functionality behind the scenes. Embedded Google Spreadsheets are touchy and might require tweaking, but should not be affected for long, if at all.

There will be a period of adjustment.
We will hunt out the really core issues first, then fringe stuff and a new theme will be worked on. We are giving it about a month to be working really nicely, ready for the new footy season.

But, but...
Please post any questions in this thread.

Just in case Big Footy crashes and never comes back. I’ll leave you with these words.

I don't know what to say really.
Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives all comes down to today.
Either we heal as a team or we are going to crumble.
Inch by inch
play by play till we're finished.
We are in hell right now, gentlemen believe me and we can stay here and get the s**t kicked out of us
or
we can fight our way back into the light.
We can climb out of hell. One inch, at a time.

Now I can't do it for you. I'm too old.
I look around and I see these young faces
and I think
I mean
I made every wrong choice a middle age man could make.
I uh....
I pissed away all my money
believe it or not.
I chased off anyone who has ever loved me.
And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror.

You know when you get old in life things get taken from you.
That's, that's part of life.
But, you only learn that when you start losing stuff.
You find out that life is just a game of inches.
So is football.
Because in either game
life or football the margin for error is so small.
I mean
one half step too late or to early
you don't quite make it.
One half second too slow or too fast
and you don't quite catch it.
The inches we need are everywhere around us.
They are in ever break of the game
every minute, every second.

On this team, we fight for that inch
On this team, we tear ourselves, and everyone around us to pieces for that inch.
We CLAW with our finger nails for that inch.
Cause we know
when we add up all those inches
that's going to make the ******* difference
between WINNING and LOSING
between LIVING and DYING.

I'll tell you this
in any fight
it is the guy who is willing to die
who is going to win that inch.
And I know
if I am going to have any life anymore
it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch
because that is what LIVING is.
The six inches in front of your face.

Now I can't make you do it.
You gotta look at the guy next to you.
Look into his eyes.
Now I think you are going to see a guy who will go that inch with you.
You are going to see a guy
who will sacrifice himself for this team
because he knows when it comes down to it,
you are gonna do the same thing for him.

That's a team, gentlemen
and either we heal now, as a team,
or we will die as individuals.
That's football guys.
That's all it is.
Now, whattaya gonna do?

Is this a quote or did you put it together?

(Log in to remove this ad.)

That's gold, George. Pure gold. The juxtaposition of the stirring quote from a fiery Pacino performance and the shiftless nihilist, Homer Simpson (a personal hero). Move aside Coppola, Kubrick and Spielberg.
When I read Mikka's post I thought about Homer instantly. Loud, obnoxious "BORING" ringing in my ears.
