Analysis Forward Line and Attack

The main problem is Taberner just cannot hold onto it, as soon as it is dewy or wet, he literally contributes nothing.

That's simply not true. He was involved in a number of goals in the Adelaide game. For a tall he is very good at ground level.

I think Tabs needs to go back to the WAFL for a few weeks and get his touch back and hopefully build his confidence.

A forward line of Pav, Resting ruck, Mayne, Crozier, Balla and Walters is good enough and rotate Fyfe, Neale and Barlow through their too.

Which one of Clarke or Hannath is going to command more respect from the oppositions back six?

Sorry but this is absolute horseshit. Our attack has been greatly improved this year with all 4 of Pav, Tabs, Clarke and Mayne playing. People seem to be massively overreacting to 2 talls having poor games in terrible wet conditions and forgettting how good those 2 guys have been up until this point.

horseshit, what a perfect description of the mystifying dross on here. Tabs, Pav and a Mayne as a third tall with Clarke chipping in with the odd good game has been outstanding in 2015 and a big reason why we're perched atop the rest.

Tabs is still an emerging player and learning the game at the peak level. He has shown some great talent. Most recently I recall his second half performance against North when he was excellent.

Its gonna be interesting to see what happens in a few weeks.

My observations so far are:
1) our goal scoring power in the earlier rounds was more due to goals from the midfield rather than the fantasmical forward line some are crapping on about.
2) Teams have identified tabs is literally zero threat and are putting the weakest defender on him and double teaming pav.
3) Ballas is **** all compared to 2013-14
4) Walters is literally the only forward player looking like he may match his prevous best.
5) Defensive medium sized forwards overrated.
6) why couldnt we do a Darling on Cam Macarthy and tell everyone what a bad guy he was and get him :(

Marking practice for Tabs for the next 6 months. He has the tank, he has the smarts, just wastes so much of his good effort by dropping the marks.

If he stuck 3/4 of the gettable marks that he was in position for, he'd be a sensation.

In terms of our forward line, we really missed Mayne on Saturday. It was one of those games where forward pressure could have generated a few extra scoring opportunities.

Is anyone else concerned about Ballas' last few weeks? In fact his whole season has been very inconsistent and below his best.

Not sure if he is injured, but if he is he should be rested to get right and give someone else a crack. He is a barometer to how we are travelling and at the moment I think he is a liability.

Still pretty dysfunctional forward of the centre this week, made worse by Hannath's total inability to make an impact; Mayne's tendency to "hot potato" the ball to a contest; and Pav's radar just completely going off. Ballas, as has already been discussed, is hopelessly out of form. Walters was the difference, and it's nice seeing him get closer to his best.

Is there anything that can be done? Is it a personnel issue or a game plan one? I don't know anymore.

Taberner is too young to play a full season of AFL. His omission is useful to keep him fresh and performing to capacity. His hands in marking contests have looked poor yet he goes back to the WAFL and gets 4 goals and 6 marks. Albeit in dry conditions. He'll play all our finals this year. Or at least I hope he does.

The whole idea Pav is being doubled team is actually rubbish. He's just being beaten 1 on 1. Rance dominated him. Rance dominated Franklin too resulting in Sydney losing the game, so that's not the end of the world. Both Sydney and Freo are too conscious of going to their big forward. hawthorn vary their forward entry a lot more. We need to become more unpredictable in our forward entries and our forwards need to improve one on one.

Feel like RTB has high hopes for Taberner to feature in our finals campaign and will do whatever it takes to help him get there. Unfortunately on GF day I'm not sure how well he'd line up against an experienced Hawks or even Sydney backline. That's not to say he wouldn't play his role in such a scenario however.

If we do make it to another GF and we manage to pull off a win I imagine it will come from the contribution of at least 10 different goal kickers in our line-up.

Agreed. If we win it I can see our highest goal scorer being Walters and the next highest being our midfielders in Fyfe, Neale and Hill. Tabs might chip in for a goal

Have to respect that Tabs went back to WAFL and performed, strongly at that. Often we see players like him just do FA. 18 disposals 7 marks shows positive signs, same as Clarke. Both should play against Brisbane.

I still can't believe what comes out of Ross's mouth during his pressers sometimes.

The beverage of choice for match committee next Thursday, particularly when talking about solving our forward problem. image.jpg

Agree with all of this.

Good post mate, we could have godzilla as our key forward but the way the ball comes in he would struggle.

We need to get more instinctive, take better options, have the balls to run and break lines and take shots on goal when they are there.
