Our forward line is probably the least developed and settled line in terms of experience and number of players who have cemented a position.

There are multiple options. Miller is a leader and physically strong, but Watts has the immature talent. Garland and Martin have been played in defence, but have been linked with forward moves. Will Fitzpatrick be offered any opportunities in his first year?

There are a huge number of players vying for the other positions. Bate, Tapscott, Sylvia, Green, Trengove and Maric all play a similar forward role imo. As do Jurrah, Pettered, McNamara and Bruce when they are in the forward line. And do we play Jetta and Wonnamaerri in the same team?

We can only pick 6 though. How are we likely to line up this year?

HF: Flank -- Half Forward -- Flank

F: Pocket -- Full Forward -- Pocket

I don't think they will play a conventional forward setup as we know it. As previously mentioned , word has it that Tall/small pairings will placed in the forward area & constantly rotating their placement...

Also the many options of midfielders & the bench, will see a rotation of players sharing the load with the forwards, not just on & off the bench for the mids...

while it isn't settled at all. I am very pleased with the options we have in the forward line. players like Green, Davey, Sylvia, Bruce and Trengove can switch from the center to the forward line with ease and all prove very dangerous down there. Petterd can switch from defense to the forward line with no problems as well

fwiw this is how I think it will line up next year

Davey Miller Bate
Petterd Jurrah Wonaeamirri

Watts and Trengove on the bench with the rest playing through the midfield and rotating into the forward line

Obviously we'll be rotating through the midfield and Casey alot with the younger guys.

Ok.. 3 quarter time of the Queens birthday game and the scores are level. We arent tanking..

How do we set up in the forward line?

Ok, Jurrah / Davey in the goal square, Watts / Green 35 metres out from goal & Miller / Jetta at CHF on the centre square... Then 2 minutes in 1st pair swap with 2nd pair to try & get a mis match, or something like that anyway...

I can't wait to see the intra club match & see if this pairing off thing works....

I like the pairing idea but I'd rather Maric or Petterd in there instead of Jetta.

Let Jetta float around the midfield

Go with the same game plan that we had for the last 3 quarters.

But iMo ideally the forward line will be a mobile one.

Bate Watts Petterd
Wonamerri Green Jurrah

Petterd to shadow Heath Shaw and try to hurt him the other way.
Watts plays more HF and wing. Using his pace and utilizing his kicking assist skills. Sharing CHF with Bate.
Bate sharing CHF, leading.
Wona the good small man.
Green to play a leading FF role. Similar to Mark Williams when the Hawks were shit.
Jurrah. Licence to do what he likes.

Sylvia, Trengove, Maric, Morton to rotate through. Morton to push forward a lot in the last quarter to utilise his height.

This pairing thing sounds like it has promise... I'm thinking watts + davey roaming the 50, jurrah + green in the square, then bate sylvia wonna petterd maric etc rotating thru the middle or off the bench.

I like this but hope Garland can get a few games a full forward swapping with Green on occasion.

F: Pocket -- Full Forward -- Pocket

Trengove will play in the midfield with the ability to go forward like Marc Murphy. McNamara (if he gets a game) and Bruce will play down back.

HF Sylvia Miller/Watts Bate
FF Wona/Maric Jurrah Petterd

Sylvia may spend more time in the middle, which could allow Tapscott a chance to play (form permitting) at half forward. Or allow us to play Watts on a flank.

Iwouldnt mind seing Garland and Martin (resting as second ruckmen) tried up forward. Fitzpatrick could be the answer long term but is 2 years being able to down a KP spot.

Davey to play in the midfield which rests up forward, Green to play a steading role across half back and in the middle, with the option to throw him forward. I don't see Jetta getting a regular game.

It's interesting to see the varying forward setups being proposed. None are without their merits but it suggests that we'll have a lot of trial and error ahead of us (on top of development) and that our forward set up isn't necessarily going to be set over night if at all.

Of the smalls, I think Jetta is ahead of Maric and Wona as a footballer due to his time last year in the thick of it around half forward and the middle of the ground - I get the impression that this is a key focus of the coaching staff before they specialise players into particular roles. Maric and Wona still strike me as the more potent or polished forward options though closer to goal so it will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

Sylvia Miller Bate
Wonna Green Jurrah

Miller will get he best defender and hopefully with Green as a leading forward out of the goal square gets the second or third (Bate getting the other), Wonna at ground level and god knows how other teams are going to match up Jurrah.

Sylvia wapping with Tapscott or Petterd

Going forward from 2012 i see:

Tapscott Watts Davey
Wonna Fitzpatick Jurrah

With Sylvia playing as a mid

hard for me to see why everyone thinks Fitzpatick is our saviour up forward??!! he was pick 50 in a weak draft for KPP's. many players with better junior records havent made it in AFL. please everyone give it a rest, he may be a nice kid, but the odds are against him

1. I don't see anyone claiming he'll be a "Saviour", some are just listing him in a potential forward line.

2. Plenty of late picks go on to become very good players at AFL so I don't know why you are discarding hope for him because of his draft number.

Alistair Lynch went at pick 50 and he turned out okay.

Davey Miller Bate
Petterd Jurrah Wonaeamirri

I'd have Green on the HFF in place of Davey but I agree with the rest of that mate. Davey will go up forward at times but I think Green can offer a lot up forward. I would imagine Sylvia, Bruce, Trengove and Jetta (Who is a midfielder, not a forward, and although he's not in our best midfield who knows? I thought he showed good signs late last year) will all rotate through the forwardline as well.

Let's not forget the Russian will get a run down there, I don't rate his kicking for goal but he'll offer that presence in the air (Jurrah is a brilliant player both int he air and on the ground but his game isn't about out muscling players or having the ball put in on his head).

At the start of 2009 he was widely regarded as the 2nd best KPP behind Butcher. He struggled to regain his form post chronic fatigue. He was an absolute bargain at 50. High risk high reward.

lets hope your all right with your Fitz love.. he looks so goofy.

and to DEZ! yes, re-read the thread someone did say he was 'the answer' up forward you twat

Looking solely at 2010 i would go with

HF Green Bate Sylvia/Davey
F Jurrah Watts Aussie/Maric

Theres obviously going to be various rotations to this during the season but we must get games into Jack Watts so long as he is fit,CHF appears to be a problem maybe Martin could be given a go not Miller just does'nt do enough,we seem to be ok for small & mid sized forwards when you add the likes of Petterd,Tapscott,Jetta who can be played there as well as Bruce,Dunn & Garland!

Not a bad setup there, It would challenge a few backlines for matchups, very versatile....

Good to hear from a neighbour....

HF: Sylvia/Green Bate Maric
FF: Petterd Jurrah Wona
Int: Watts
Emer: Jetta, Miller, Tapscott
Wildcard: Garland

Ok, So I've gone small and not overly strong either, but Miller isn't worth including in a starting team at this stage! Jurrah and Bate might be undersized but they are the starting CHF and FF respectively on our list. Wona and Maric have a heap of talent, they need to play. Same with Watts off the bench. Green and Sylvia rotate through the forward line to give it some real established talent. I'm also expecting big things from Petterd. He bagged a few goals last year and I'm expecting improvement again this year. He's a clever player at half forward and in the pocket, capable of kicking more than a goal and game and also giving defensive pressure.

Resting ruckmen in Jamar and Martin should spend some time there, but not a heap. I'd love Fitz to be the answer, but I'm not sure that even if he is he would be anything like ready for AFL next year.

Garland is the wildcard. But firstly I want to see him fit and healthy and playing footy before I switch him to CHF.
