Forward Line

Was thinking.

HF: Dunn, Watts, Green
FF: Bennell, Jurrah, Petterd

Austin, Bate, Bail, Tapscott

Even supposing Aussie and Bail (can play HB) squeeze onto a bench, not a lot of room in that forward line if Bate can't get a look in.

Can't help but think if Bennell has had as good a pre-season as is suggested, we might throw him back and develop him into a Bartram-with-better-disposal BP.

Watts Green Morton
Pettered Jurrah Bennell

Obviously we'll rearely line up with 6 players inside the forward 50 - but Id like to soo this roughly. Rotating guys like Sylvia, Dunn, Tapscott, Bail and Trengove through half forward and Maric if can make it.

On a more important note - BC shouldnt you be in the Walkabout for Australia day - or you heading there on Wednesday?

With the sub rule I think this will be quite likely.

Rotating a group between mid and HF/F. Tapscott, Maric, Sylvia, Bennell and Wona are all attacking short/mediums who will need to have regular stints midfield IMO.

Wednesday. Always Wednesday. :thumbsu:

HF: Dunn Watts Jurrah
FF: Bennell Howe Petterd

*Wona and Bennell would be battling it out for our crumbing forward spot. I have Bennell just ahead at this stage.

*Green would obviously rotate like he did last year through the midfield and F50. But i think Howe looks a classic ready made full forward to me and will hopefully hold his spot in the team throughout the season.

*Bate and Dunn would be fighting for the Flank position. Dunn moved ahead of Bate last year, but let's see what Bate can do with a full pre season under him. Dunn at this stage. Tapscott will also be competing for a flank position throughout the season.

*Petterd really proved to us early last season that he can be a dangerous forward. Hard to match up on as he has good hands and is good off the deck as well. Definite starter in the F50.

*Jurrah as well is obviously a certainty. You could literally play him anywhere in the F50. I have him on a flank where he can use his agility and running power.

*Watts should start to have an impact on games the next couple of seasons. We persist with him at CHF and cross our fingers.

Bail and Sylvia would rotate through the flanks as well. Don't be surprised to see Tapscott early in the season. Hoping Fitzpatrick improves enough at Casey to get a call up at some stage as well. Forward line really starting to take some shape. If Watts comes good, we will have some serious firepower in the coming years. Especially when you consider Jurrah, Watts, Petterd, Bennell, Howe, Wona, Tapscott & co are all still very young. Very exciting times ahead....

Agreed. Although, i have a feeling Maric will be used through the middle more than the F50. His kicking is a feature and he is generally good through traffic. If his fitness is there(from what i am hearing he is smoking it at pre season), i think we can turn him into a handy midfielder. We seem to have the crumbing forward position covered with Wona and Bennell. Petterd can play tall or small, and Jurrah is a freak and can do anything. Maric to me could provide us with another genuine midfielder.

Interesting CD I agree with you we have a number of options ( as long as they all stay fit ) for the first time in years.
I think it is put up or shut up time for Mr. Watts, show a reasonable result in the first two games or out to Casey and give someone else a go.
However which ever way you look at it we have a dozen players vieing for the six spots, that can only be good.

Seriously I wonder how many people who post on BigFooty about Watts have actually watched him play.

Watch round 22 vs North Melbourne on AFL Bigpond right now, I'll wait.....

He was pretty good wasn't he? Now go and watch round 18 vs Brisbane.

Jack Watts is a very good player, sure he isn't as consistent as you might hope but essentially 2010 was his first real year of AFL football, so in my mind he did more than enough.

If you expect Watts to be a big bruising Jonathan Brown or Wayne Carey I think you need to reassess your expectations.

Right now if I were in charge of getting a new contract for Jack Watts I'd extend it for 3 years or more, he is a pure gun.

I was at the game in Brisbane and I wonder how many people who watch Watts see what they want to see.
Which may not be the reality.
That may have been one of his better games but from were I sat it was ordinary!
And by the way he got a new contract last year!

If you're not happy with a big agile marking who is often first to the ball (against smaller midfield players) then what does impress you?

Watts had 27 touches that night and worked harder than anyone on the field, sure he had 19 handballs but if you look closer you'll find the majority of those are in the middle of a pack. (This directly resulted in at least one goal that night.)

There is a gif/youtube clip going around from that game that shows him kicking a shot out of bounds on the full that is used to mock him. The commentary that occurs at that time is 100% complementary of Watts stating he has showed tonight why he was a number 1 pick and the shot on goal was most likely missed because he was spent from working so hard all night.

Honestly though, what do you expect from a tall KP player who was the youngest recruit in his year, (fwiw the next year the lowest age was changed) who has only ever had 1 pre-season in his first year of AFL?

Personally Jack Watts delivered everything I expected and more, he is so agile and fast I still wouldn't take another draftee as number one.

All you say makes perfect sense I just want to see him play a good game in the first couple of games in 2011 because there were large numbers of games last year when he did not earn his spot.
A number of our other recruits of the same period play one average game and they are dropped to Casey.
I want him to be a success believe me, can he just make it before I leave this mortal toil!

I watched that R18 game vs Brisbane just a couple of weeks ago. I remember Watts doing so much right, but oh so much wrong. I also remember the right he was doing was midfielder sort of stuff like winning hard ground balls. Where as the wrong he was doing was KPF stuff like dropping marks on the lead inside 50.

Watts getting the usual unfair expectations placed on him at such an early age, but Howe is getting it a bit as well I notice. Pretty big ask to suggest hes a 'ready made AFL full forward' coming out of the Tassie league for his first year..

Ridiculous statement. Firstly the kid is still only 19 and needs time and secondly what would be a reasonable result?

They gave Miller 10 years so surely Watts deserves more than 2 weeks?

I think your right on the money, mine would be

HF: Dunn, Watts, Bennell
F: Jurrah, Green, Petterd

Aussie will get a chance to stake a claim in the NAB Cup.

I do like the look of the forward line even though we genuinely don't have a big bloke. I think with the exception of a select few most of them are burdens if they don't take a mark.

We have 4 genuine multiple goal kickers in Dunn, Jurrah, Green and Petterd and if Watts improves a fair bit then we could have 5. Hopefully Bennell and\or Wonaeamirri can add more goals than last year, just over 20 goals between them for the season is nowhere near enough for a goal sneak.

As part of the smaller interchange bench I expect a lot of forwards to spend time in the midfield.

While we may not need Green as part of the midfield rotation, the rest he would give to Davey, Sylvia etc would be invaluable in keeping a high pace throughout the game.

This is why I think Bennell will get the spot over Aussie and Bail is likely to get a good look in.

I think I saw enough good things from Watts over the games he played in 2010. The main issue IMO with killer are his fumbly hands. Too many times he makes great position, gets first to the ball (good) and then fumbles the killer (hehe) touch going forward. Sometimes just needs a little bit more composure when the ball is coming towards him, but the guy is 19! The point is, I'd rather have him making those sort of mistakes when winning front position, than not leading his man to the ball at all.

Furthermore, when he does have a bit of time on the ball, rarely does he make an incorrect decision and his disposal by foot is as good if not better than most in the side, IMO. (possible exaggeration there but not really)

A very good point LS.

I’m of the belief that a side is much much harder to stop when you have multiple players able to kick goals and also play multiple positions.

It makes it harder to plan against and easier for us to cover injuries/form as well as create mismatches.

Where would you have played him ?

You do realise that there's a fine line between getting games into a developing talent, which helps fast track their future, and having them play at a lower level ?

These games will be beneficial in the long run in case you're wondering.

I think more than that he was clearly too good for Casey, iirc when he kicked 4 goals in one game (from the wing) he basically picked himself.
