I must correct myself - we do have backman doing Ok in the SANFL. Nathan Bock did a solid job today. Took some good marks, provided some run and drive from defence. Tall but really needs more muscle to be serious option for us.

He also needs to stop pushing his opponent in the back as often as he does. Might get away with it at SANFL level but not AFL.

Skipworth - quiet early but helped get the Eagles going from the second and did alright. Kicked a goal.

Shirley - hardly saw him use the ball. Got tackled in the centre square just about every time it went his way.

Listening to Gary's press conference, one gets the feeling that Bock and Sarge will come in next week.

Seen Graham Polak and Luke McPharlin play lately? Always shoving opponents and getting away with it.

If Bock finally makes his debut I'll be over the moon :D

Will Hart be ready for next week, as it is a Friday night game??

Agree that the Hound & Stevens should return to Norwood. The Hound to find some form & Stevo to learn how to kick.

Must stretch the Tiger's defence next week with the return of Sarge.

Need to quell the influence of Sugar, Coughlin & Brown.

Luke McPharlin is the worst offender and the one that gets away with it the most. He takes a lot of marks in defence but he pushes his opponent in the back EVERY bloody time and NEVER gets pinged.

I reckon Bock is just about a certainty to make a debut against the Tigers.

I reckon Bassett will miss a couple with an ankle injury and I think its time for Stevens to go back to Magpies and get some consistency to his game.

I think next week our midfield MUST win the battle. I think Tigers have better midfield than us ATM. Johnson will kill us. I would play Stenglein on either Sugar or Coughlan. Brown is the one I can't think of a good match up for.:(

I was told tonight that Hart is very much still in doubt. Hopefully he will improve and that will not be the case, but he would have to be doubtful at best at this stage.

Bassett has rolled an ankle and will miss 1 or 2 weeks, so he will be out.

With McGregor very likely to go back to CHB and Hentschel to FB, perrie will almost certainly come in, and I also think Scott Stevens will survive.

While he will probably survive as well, Nigel seems to have played one season too long.

One of the problems with our mid-field is that not only Kane Johnson and Mark Bickley are gone out of the fabulous line-up, we also have Goodwin injured, and Macca struggling as well when in the mid-field.

It's getting very thin!!

Our midfield is no where near as good as it was in 2002.

I forgot Reilly. He should be back next week and will make it back inot the side one would think.

I think you are right in thinking that stevens will survive BUT he is REALLY starting to p|ss me off.

We need to give Sarge, Reilly and Bock a game next week so 3 must get the arse.

Bassett will miss and other 2 must make way. Schuey was very quiet tonight and is in danger of missing out. Poor bloke is yet to play in a winning side when it counts. 4 AFL games for 4 losses :(

Was thinking the same about our midfield. We just don't have the quality coming through yet. I assume Reilly will be OK for next week.

You are probably right on your Smart comments. Trying hard, but just to the Nige of old. Would we be better off with Stevens as a defender or bringing Bock in?

Stinger must play on 1 of the gun Tiger midfielders ... & I'm not taling about Campbell! How about Begley for Brown?

I think Stevens is too "akward" to be a defender. A bit like Perrie :(

If there ever was a time to try him as a defender it was tonight when Thomas moved Kosi forward. Stevens was warming the pine at the time and i would have brought him on and played him on Kosi, rather than moving Hentschel on Kosi and Smart on Nick

Campbell is one of the most overrated players I have ever seen.

Begley on Brown would be interesting.

I think we are better off bringing Bock in. Stevens has had his chances, time to give Bock a taste of AFL footy and see how he might pull up. Even if he only contributes a little, it'll be worth it for the club.

Sarge & Reilly are must ins.
Bassett definite out, Stevens should return to the SANFL.

Probably would keep Smart as an option on the bench with Bassett out, unless Hart returns.

If we want to blood Bock, then perhaps Schuey gets a decent run with Westies. Can't think who else to drop.

Get the feeling Begley is a cluey guy & we need someone with smarts & good concentration to play on Brown. Also, Begley is capable of playing as a defender or in the midfield as required when following Brown.

I agree. begs has played well and will probably get the job on Brown. With Richo out with a hammy and Ottens doing most of the ruckwork I reckon Brinw might spend a bit more time in the forward line.

McGregor on Ottens, Hentschel on Morrison, Bock on Schulz, Begley on Brown

True. It's just that I cant see an Adelaide Crows player getting away with it. If Bock did it, I reckon they'd spot it every time.

From todays Advertiser Port V West

West coach Shaun Rehn was happy with Crows-listed Ben Rutten's progress in his first senior game this year, despite him missing three chances that could have given the Bloods a bigger half-time lead.

"He could've polished it off with a few, but I was really happy with his game today," Rehn said of Rutten, Adelaide's 2002 rookie selection.

Good to see Rutten is getting back to form. Its a shame South had the bye this week as Torney didnt get a run, (unless he played reserves somewhere and no one mentioned it.)

Gee some of the comments re tonights game, are pretty emotional - shouldn't post straight after the game;)

I was really proud of the effort the AFC put in tonight.
Fact is we wern't good enough, particularly in the bigman dept. Its twice now that we haven't been able to match-up on the likes of Reiwoldt, Kosi, Noble, Macguire,Penny, gehrig. We were able to cover some, but not all, and our lack of a FB was very evident tonight, in that Smart and Basset were never going to be able to match Gehrig. He is probably the best FF in the AFL at the moment, and we are forced to play our oldest player on him conceding athleticism, height, and weight. Basset (although not in form) was never going to be the right matchup.

And yet this board has the audacity to can these two players for their performances!
We simply didn't have enough Bigmen options.
We need a tall strong FB, and Hentschell is not the short term answer.
We were outbodied and muscelled most of the night, yet our commitment and effort was first class

Robert Walls was absolutely correct in his call, going into the 3rd qtr, when he said "I fear for Adelaide, St Kilda have 10 players they can rotate in the midfield, Adelaide do not"
Our midfield and their disposal to forwards is woeful. Gallagher was great with his disposal coming into the forward line, but who else ?
Stenglein, FFS get him either to a HBF, or get him off the ground. I counted only 3 effective disposals for the night, and they were in open play. Put him into heavy traffic of the centre square, and his disposal skills are slow and woeful - count how many times Clarke got the ball to him, only to see a 20mtre mongral kick forward - try 100% of the time - get him out of the centre square!
Count how many turnovers he had - yet someone said he played well?

Player Comments:
Hentschell - continues to improve - stiffy your support was well warranted
Jerricho - Liked his demeanor, has a determined look on his face from when he ran onto the ground, which was great to see from a 1st gamer. Not overawed, yes took sometime to get the pace of the game - but gee he looked good.
Begley - Why was this guy overlooked in the PS. Has class, great disposal skills, and can do a wide array of jobs for the coach.
Bode - great tackling and determination, best game for a long time.
Welsh - out of form
Hudson - love him, want to adopt him. He is improving all the time, his palming has already improved substantially, as he is now getting his hands to the ball, and directing his taps. Deserves more game time.
Clarke - Great effort - tried his guts out all night.
Roo - leading from the front, inspirational - just would like to see his disposal to forwrds improve.
Macleod - After all the talk of trading him, havent seen many comments so far congratulating him on his game. A weeks a long time in football - he played a great game - hands up who still wants to trade this club icon.
Carey - Maybe fitter, but the swagger that has always been synonomous with Carey has gone, and I think he knows his time in the game is coming to an end.

In summary, beaten by a better team, with more body weight, and big man options, and midfield stregnth.
Game style considering the above was IMO fine, and the coach couldnt have taken too much of the blame for the loss.
Certainly the best we have played this year, and we are getting better.
