Fourth Test team

Yes, everyone who questions Shauns ability as a test match batsman is in a state of agonising shame at present.
Yes he had a couple of bad Tests lets forget all the good ones he has played, and then no doubt push for some bum that plays for my state.

He's far from perfect incredibly inconsistent but has still played many vital innings for Australia and is correctly in the side atm (especially weakened). Some people need to get over it, never seen such irrational hatred of a player.
And all because Rod is his dad.

Trouble with Johnson is that he could look every inch a batsman. He could play off the back foot and front foot with equal facility. It must have frustrated his coaches no end.

Johnson is probably not the best example though. In the most polite way I can say this, and only using it in a cricketing context - Johnson was a bit of a headcase. I might never have seen anyone go from genuinely being the best cricketer in the world to barely being first grade worthy as quickly as Johnson would.

Usually I hate oh it's the way they play excuse for poor shots but I think it actually applies to blokes like MJ and Starc. Being defensive and taking their time like proper batsmen I just don't think would do them much good, natural striking ability is really by far their best attribute may as well score whilst they can.

Huh, I can't think of anyone bar Watto who has been hated like Smarsh

The state of Australian cricket yet Patterson can't get a run.

54 matches, average of 40, better than Head or Labuschagne.

Averaging 40 in Shield these days a ****ing achievement.

Hasn't made a ton since the first game of the 16/17 season.

Do you mean the Patterson who can't score a hundred to save his life?

25 50s for only 5 100s is a woeful return, and you can tell watching him because he never looks completely settled and is still having the occasional fish when he's on 60odd. He's like the opposite land Shaun Marsh.

Really though this just highlights where we are at. Every campaigner on here or reddit or at the pub is all raging about 'why can't X player from my state get a baggy green, they average 40!'. We have a bunch of just ok batsman who all have distinct flaws. Every bloke who is there about in shield has an obvious flaw or is just not quite at the level required to be a clear test batsman of the future. So we can pick blokes for just barely averaging 40, or after they score a big ton in a random game, but we shouldn't be surprised when they turn out to be not that great.

You'd think Renshaw would be in now. Exact same thing happened last year, he only needed to make one decent score to lock him in but instead they went for Bancroft. Renshaw and Finch look to be our openers now.

Oh, I'm with you there, but that's what must have driven his coaches nut. Imagine knowing what a player like that could do and then watching him do the opposite. As a coach, you'd probably feel quite helpless. I think Punter said in his book that he was the most naturally gifted player he's worked with.

Michael Clarke also said in his book that Johnson was the best/most gifted athlete he ever played with. Was just naturally good at everything he played.

Silk?

I still remember people losing their loads over his shield 100 where he was dropped 100 times on a flat wicket against NSW with Copeland, Teenage Pat Cummins and a couple of rubbish spinners.

Who do you want, Patterson is actually one of the best in the Shield.

Name others who average over 40 in Shield cricket. Go on. There are none.

This is how far Australian cricket has fallen.

Head was picked on "potential". Same with Labuschagne. Yet Patterson can't get a run?

Get Jake Lehmann in then

Get him in before he's ruined by T20!

A year or two and his technique will be ruined by T20.

Lehmann, Wade (when you take out his test average), Handscomb, Renshaw, Burns.

It’s not T20 ruining our batsmen. We just don’t have the talent going around.

Team is set I believe unless someone in the shield gets about 7 scores of under 10 in a row.
1. Renshaw
2. Finch
3. Khawaja --> Harris if injured (obvious re-arrangement of order)
4. Head
5. S. Marsh
6. M. Marsh
7. Paine
8. Cummins
9. Starc
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood

12. Siddle
