Fourth Test team

As it stands Paine, Lyon, and Khawaja are the only absolute locks and even with Ussie it might be fitness pending. Finch deserves another look and a good innings here would give Head a hometown Test but there's six spots up for grabs at the moment imo.

You can just about lock in the Marsh brothers. Langer was reported as giving Shaun Marsh the ODI series against South Africa as an audition for the Test series against India and I don't see the selectors dropping the vice-captain, even after a poor series against Pakistan.

I think 8 of the 11 is fairly obvious at this stage and unfortunately I have no doubt two of the other remaining 3 spots will be filled by a couple of Marsh's.

Finch

Renshaw
Khawaja
Head

Maxwell
Pukovski
Paine
Cummins
Starc
Hazlewood
Lyon

Agree with all them except would go Stoinis @ 6 (will be M Marsh thou) and would give Pukovski a go if Khawaja doesn't come up.

IN: Renshaw, Lynn, Cummins, Hazlewood
OUT: Labuschagne, M. Marsh, Siddle, Holland

1. Finch
2. Renshaw
3. Khawaja
4. Head
5. S.Marsh
6. Lynn
7. Paine
8. Cummins
9. Starc
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood

Lynn averages 43 in FC Cricket, in just over 70 knocks. Has got himself 6 hundreds and 12 fifties and I believe one of the most natural ball strikers in the world. Deserves a go in my opinion, especially with positions up for grabs.

Agree with all that are bolded and Renshaw. However, Maxwell has had 14 innings at test level and has an average of 26. Has the one hundred and the one not out on 25. This means 12/14 innings with no scores really. Think he's had his chance at this level. And with Pucovski, whilst I believe he will play Test Cricket at some point, we need to ensure we dont rush him into it and give him at least and until the end of the shield season to prove his quality is durable over the course of a season. Ideally two more seasons to see him smash the door down for selection.

Australian vice-captains actually have a pretty strong history of being dropped. This list is from Wikipedia, but I imagine it's at least vaguely accurate:

Test vice captains
A number of players have also served as vice-captain in the test side including:

I think there will only be 3 changes for the Indian series, Cummins and hazlewood in and renshaw in for usman.

Spot on and as it should be. Far better Australian teams have stunk it up in subcontinental conditions. It's par for the course.

The last thing I want to see is a merrygoround of undeserving players donning the baggygreen. I'd rather see a bit of continuity and shield players only being offered the chance if they really bang down the door.

Lynn was too impatient and looked out of his depth in his sole ODI, so his ability to score big in tests seems unlikely against the top bowlers. The step-up from bludgeoning nobodies in shield to playing against the best in the world is too great, especially for a guy who is best known for power. Test Bowlers will figure him out when the ball is swinging or seaming, if you cramp him up he's got nowhere to go.

Plus, he hasn't scored runs since 2015/16, and hasn't played a full season since 2013/14 when he averaged 68.

The same was said of Warner before he established himself as a world class Test batter, I've got no doubt Lynn has the tools to do similar.

It's a moot point though as the bloke has no interest in the longer format. He has no confidence in his body and is happy travelling the globe and earning big $'s.

Khawaja was good in the recent series, but he is our most talented at home so deserves to bat No. 3. Renshaw (hopefully) is a default pick as opener, and Handscomb has shown signs of form in JLT Cup which possibly warrants another go.

My team is:
Finch
Renshaw
Khawaja
Head
S Marsh
Handscomb
Paine
Starc
Cummins
Hazlewood
Lyon

Warner at least has a good centre of gravity and a solid technique. Lynn just steps back and frees his arms, which does work when the ball isn't swinging and the pitch is flat, but otherwise in test cricket will get found out.

Lynn against the Indian attack wouldn't be pretty.

This isn't a easybeat Indian team. This is like Bhuvi, Umesh, Ishant (who's actually good now), and Bumrah. Heck even Shami to add to the bowling stocks. They did really well in SA and England.

I don't trust Lynn to be in the middle order. I trust Mitch Marsh a lot more.

The main way I’m thinking of it is we have 6 tests until we can all go back to normal and have our best team on the park from then on in, barring injury.

Lynn retired from FC cricket by turning down a contract IIRC. Unfortunately his body would probably explode if he tried to play a Test series.

Dropping Lyon is one of the dumber things I've heard.

That's a big call. I literally trust Pat Cummins more with the bat than Mitch Marsh. Although Marsh will likely go alright on the highways we produce out here.

I was reading the 32 page cricket lift-out in the Courier Mail today and Mark Waugh picked the Marsh brothers in his 1st test team. Let's just be grateful he's not a selector anymore.

I have a feeling we will all be disappointed regardless. Shaun normally dominates State cricket when he gets back there these days and can't see the next few Shield games being any different.

Selector or not, he's entitled to say what he thinks will happen. I'm 99% certain both will be in the First Test team.

So if he's in the ODI team/squad, that would limit him to 1-2 Shield games?

Ah yes, forgot about the ODIs. And just looked at he did well in the series over vs England so you'd say he's a lock (shows how much I follow Cricket during footy season).

Mitch Marsh is like the anti-all rounder: not good enough to get into the side either as a batsman or a bowler. And yet he's played 30 Tests. That's more or less the point at which we binned off Derek Pringle and Chris Lewis. And Craig White, whose stats are very similar to Marsh's.

I never thought I'd long for the days of Shane Watson yet here we are :(
